Unhappy Mission (im)possible for IT in WA

After more than one year of searching for anything in WA IT sector, I got around 100 thank you letters, no interview at all.
I have a close friend in one recruitment agency, he is pushing for me too, with no results.
Do you find this CV interesting at all? Any comments are welcomed.

Why WA?

You sound brilliantly qualified, but is WA the right place for someone so smart?

Anyway I am sure the IT bods on here can add far more useful comments than moi, just think people need to look at whats on offer in a particular area.

Well, I have some relatives here, been here 20 and 15 years ago, etc.
I think the same situation is on East as well. It is so hard to break into the Perth IT sector. It is a case of not what you
know but who you know...

Have you tried sending cv to East Coast companies - I know you might not want a job over here but might let you see what other options are open. A possible short term contract on one side might lead to other leads on the west?

I personally think sending CV's to people is a waste of time.

Perth is (as already pointed out) a very much "who you know" place and the only way to get to know people is to get out there and make some contacts.

There are a lot of "meets" that go on within the IT industry as well as other get togethers etc, and it may cost you a few bucks to go to one, but it's the best way in.

And don't jest at the comment "who you gunna sleep with", you might not have to physically, but a bit of flirting can go a long way!

Hi Dean,

I'm sure you've probably already thought of this, but what about falling back on your Civil Engineering background. Using your DB experience maybe something GIS based?

Employers are crying out for Civil Engineers in Aus and NZ, I know because my wife is one.

As an IT person myself, I know .NET and J2EE developers are pretty sought after, ones that are able to work on all tiers(web, web services, components, DB)...otherwise nothing much doing.

Good luck anyway.

John.

when i used to actually have a staff base in my job and had to go through cv's i always looked for headings on the cv that listed achievements in previous jobs i.e implemented xyz that resulted in increased productivity/saved company £x etc.in the current market this is a big seller to any and i mean any in the sense if there are any employers.Dont know if you can add this to your cv but if possible may just make your cv stand out that little bit more.
Do you have anything like you automated some processes like adding new users or implementes scripts that updated client desktops which resulted in reduction of admin time on such tasks etc

long and short of it is that i too wanted to go to WA but am now looking at NSW even though it doesnt seem a huge amount better.

I agree with this. My husband is a civil engineer and had several job offers in Oz before he even moved out here (although only one in Adelaide where we have to live because of my job).

He got all the job offers purely on the strength of his CV because he knew no one in any of the places he applied to. Your CV seems excellent and I am sure an intelligent person will eventually read it !!

Good luck

Yes, that is all described in the selection criteria for spacific position, 4 to 6 pages for essential and desirable criteria, with S.T.A.R. methodology.
We are talking about more than 100 advertised positions. For every position they will ask 3 to 5 people for an interview. That is 300 to 500 people in last year. I can't understand that no one is interested to see who I am.

PS
Thanks John, it is a time to switch my cereer, obviously.

I think you can also make a twist on your resume to highlight specific skills you have aquired (Oracle for example). This way you will fit less jobs but you will "better fit" more (actually you can do this for each job you apply to).

Monster (www.monster.com) have a section on resume building that you may find usefull

Cheers and good luck...

Hi

I am coming to Perth in January .. and have been using internet agencies .... so far I have collected lots of dear Johns..

Can you help with information on "meets" .. .. I don't suppose these are advertised in the local press... Is joining the local branch of the ACS any value... ?

Thanks with anticipation
