So generous with your praise: generally quite high? Pisses on anything Oz has ever produced. It's a little rich coming from a country that has such stellar international TV celebrities as Bert Newton (who?) and Ray Martin (even bigger WHO?). I once had a conversation with an ABC TV director in Oz. He was whinging about the fact the BBC made high quality programmes (!), eg "Life on Earth" and Oz doesn't have the funds to compete - the poor dears. Oz has the TV it deserves. Aside from the relatively few that watch SBS, the Oz masses would rather watch wall-to-wall TV game shows, footy shows and imports. |

not to mention the importation of Neighbours :D :D

I think it's kettles and black pots Mike because it seems to me that much of UK TV is wall to wall game shows, big brother, pop idol, reality crap, makeovers etc so I would say the Brits get what they deserve too. One now overhears such scintillating conversations to the effect that it should have been Justin not Priscilla who got evicted, blah, blah, blah. P.S. Ukraine, I think, has more golds than GB - do we hear about it anywhere but the UK(raine)? OzTennis :) And BTW, everyone who saw The Producers when we were in Melbourne said Bert Newton was brilliant in it - including discerning Brits as well as undiscerning Aussies. :) |

It's not surprising the BBC gets a compulsory donation of well over £100 from over 25 million willing donors so no wonder the ABC can't compete. (BTW, have a look at the credits at the end of your brilliant BBC documentaries and see how many are part funded by the ABC, Canadian BC etc.

'Tis true that dross also exists on BBC. But, a lot of the home-grown stuff is good. The equivalent on Oz TV is often of the 'Oz city girl - who is unluckly in love - moves to the bush to meet a big, hairy bloke who wrestles snakes, puts out bushfires with his bare hands, but is still in touch with his feminine side' dross, ie still more Oz myth-making. PS Well done! You have now quadrupled the number of people - outside Oz - that have heard of Bert Newton :) |
Re: Missing UK Gold in the Olympics
I find it quite hard to believe that anyone can heap such praise on the BBCs Olympic coverage. It's amazing to hear how negative the commentators are about the athletes. Today in the round up the announcer said, "and Mike Parsons (decathlon - I think that's his name) let everyone down by falling 40cm short of his life time best in the pole vault". The poor bugger is competing in a very difficult event and is accused of letting everyone down. Throoughout the swimming the commentators were constantly criticising the GB team and its the same in every sport. And they do it to every country.
Watching Spain beat GB 5-1 in the hockey was another perfefct example. Spain score 5 cracking goals and all the commentators discuss is how poor GB's defending is. Not once did they compliment the spnish players. Ch 7 shows so much of Australian athletes because they're broadcasting in Australia. Makes sense doesn't it? The BBC shows lots of the British athletes as well. I can't imagine the NBC showing little of the US team. Finally, as for the quality of TV, British free to air telly is nothing to write home about. Unless you invest heavily in property and want about 40 different ideas from 40 different home makeover shows for your 40 houses then there is little to watch. Add to this numerous soaps that make Neighbours look like award winning stuff and re-runs of Waking the Dead then its not so great is it. Its also impossible for the likes of the ABC to consistently produce quality TV as it has about 5% of the funding the BBC is given. Now excuse me as I flick between Emmerdale, Corrie, some rubbish show on channel five and some British comentators slagging off more British athletes. |

From my limited viewing - it is an infomercial for a chronic manic depressives' recruitment group, right? |

Re: Missing UK Gold in the Olympics
Glad to have you back OzT.
For what's it worth, I see Brit TV as pretty much the same as Aussie TV. I don't miss Eastenders. Sure the BBC make some real gems. Fantastic - we get to see many here as well. BM |
Re: Missing UK Gold in the Olympics
Hmmm we appear to have wandered miles off topic, but seeing as we are now discussing free to air broadcasters and not Kelly Holmes win in the 800m...
is there actually a finer broadcasting organisation than the BBC. Taking BBC1, BBC2, and Radios 1-5 into acount. Can any other broadcasting organisation hold a candle to them. I'd venture not. |

Re: Missing UK Gold in the Olympics
I'd forgotten about Film4...excellent stuff. Why did they stop?
Your points re the others are valid, though I was thinking in terms of quality + range. eg CBS might be a massive broadcaster, but it mostly broadcasts tat. A&E on the other hand broadcasts and makes quality stuff, but only on the one channel. I think BBC news superior to CNN, Fox, SKy, but would say the BBC World Channel is horrible to watch as it has a non ad and that dreadful jingle every 5 minutes |
