Hi folks.
Having total mental block here, with these income calculations. Thought had it all sorted.
Wage offered $64000 (approx)
Wage here £24k basic. Had it in my head would need $60000 to break even (2.5 times £24k ie. 60k but with dollar sign). Do I have this wrong and it should be 2.5 times the £24k which is £60k and then convert that to dollars? Making $90k we would need to break even?
Good at English and History. Maths - total numpty.
Many thanks. Sitting here sweating thinking simple error could have f****d plans up.

No you were right the first time.
The rule of thumb is to try to have £1 = $2.5 for a similar standard of living.

Took me ages to realise she was refering to my habit of calling it maths not math...
Is this an english thing? or merely a bogan uneducated unwashed mathes... Sorry masses...thing?

Math is a US thing.
The Aust people in our families all say Maths.
Math is starting to creep in a little because of US tv and facebook I think...

Math is a ridiculous Americanism. Mathematics is the study of the field of maths - of which there are many, many different kinds, and hence is a plural (according to the OED anyway).
You wouldn't consider taking part in gymnastic, or getting into politic, or doing a course in physic, so why would you do it with math?
As the previous poster said, sadly the prevelance of FaceBook and US TV shows means that it is creeping into British English.
To the OP - Sorry - this really doesn't help you find an answer to your question!

Phew!! So to recap, if earn £24k (sterling) in UK, you would need at least
$60k (Aus dollars) to not notice much difference?
God, something so simple can send you into a blind panic. Give me a 20,000 word essay anyday.
Thanks peeps.

phys·ic
   [fiz-ik] Show IPA noun, verb, phys·icked, phys·ick·ing.
noun
1.
a medicine that purges; cathartic; laxative.
2.
any medicine; a drug or medicament.
3.
Archaic . the medical art or profession.
4.
Obsolete . natural science.
Actually it's not all that old. When my friend told her grandad she was going to study physics at uni he fully expected her to become a medical doctor.

Yes, but within reason. £24K in Sheffield doesn't give you the same as £24K in Chelsea. So $60K can buy different lifestyles in different places.

Hi
yes understand what you're saying. It's Newcastle, NSW. Looks fairly reasonable rental wise. And being by the coast, hoping to do fairly cheap things like day at the beach etc and we know there's good camping there (from when we lived out there before BK - before kids).
