Melbourne in a weekend...

This is great, getting excited now and we're not going until mid September
With regard Chapel St, is there a 'good' end or is it the whole thing? Pretty please

Heres a bit of a list....
Brunswick St, Fitzroy.
Botanical Gardens.
Atrium on 35.. 26 Collins St, Cocktail bar with views over Melbourne,
Go and See Chloe at Young and Jacksons, opposite Flinders St Station
Do Hardware Lane, and as many of the other little laneways that you can find in the CBD.
The Edge.. @ the Eureka Sky Deck
Do the Ferry from Southbank to Williamstown... and find your way back to the CBD by train.... Not that the train ride is exciting or spectacular in anyway.. at least you will see a bit of Melbourne and it's system. Williamstown is well worth the trouble.
Go to the Crown Casino complex and do Southbank... just to look at the shops and one of the biggest entertainment venues in Aus. I'm by no means a fan of Casinos.. but it is worth a cursory visit.
Nirankar at 174 Queen st, is a safe bet for a half decent curry.
Tip do Lygon st Carlton, Smith St, Collingwood, and Brunswick st' Fitzroy on the same day if possible as they are all relatively close to one another, and give you a good contrast of what Melbourne has to offer it's local citizens.
Plus use the trams as much as possible rather than train.
Enjoy your visit MP....

Have a coffee or a quick pasta/risotto in DeGraves Street across from Flinders St Station. Go into the subway under Flomders Street for some really funky clothes shops. Top of subway stairs, grab a waffle from my mate Marc. Walk through the lanes, duck into passages to discover some great bars, cafés and shops in the CBD.
GPO is good for upmarket window shopping experience. Walk past Parliament House through the parks to the Carlton Gardens and the Royal Exhibition Building and the Melbourne Museum. Have a wander down Gertrude Street and Brunswick Street. Take the 96 tram to St Kilda and the Luna Park. Visit the Victoria Market for lunch on Friday and try the bratwurst place or the bureks next door.
Most of all, look up at the buildings. There are some absolutely amazing buildings everywhere that are easily missed because people don't look up.
Enjoy!

I'm on the Tram/Train map and there's clocks showing times but I'm being thick and can't get my head around distances. If we got a tram from Flinders St down to St Kilda how long does it take roughly? Also with regard Chapel St, is there a 'good' end or is it the whole thing? Pretty please

You want Chapel Street between High Street and Toorak Road, in Prahran and South Yarra.

I've had a pretty good search but it's a bit like looking for a tree in a forest so...... First Born is being an awesome daughter and is taking me to Mellie for a long weekend. We've got plans out of the city for the Sunday and Monday but I'm looking for 'must do' things on the Friday and Saturday. She'll want to do some shopping but only for a couple of hours so what do Mellie folk suggest?
Also we've not booked the hotel yet, leaving it until a bit closer and keeping fingers crossed we get a good deal on the cheap sites but a question - how big is the CBD? Should we look to stay the Docklands end or is Lygon Street way close enough to everything or am I in the wrong place?
Please and thank you! Oh and is Chinatown any good?

I am off to melbourne in 3 hours
and its nice and cold If you get off at the airport and take the red bus in to town, they give you a booklet called melb in winter, summer... etc and its full of good info.
Shops are quite good, all the qld suspects plus lots of lanes and boutique stuff in the 300 odd suburbs.
Food brill, wander down sidestreets, ( within reason, few dodgy characters as anywhere) find cafes etc and try usually good.
Look ahead for theatre exhibitions, I have Dame Edna finale tour included in this trip
with my very flamboyant gay cousin, hes a science professor but you would never know it
jump around the city on the free tram if you are not familiar with the city.
Pack layers, serioulsy we have been in the same week in january and one year got 4c at night and one time 44c in the day, variable you might say.

Go up the tower on the south bank (what is it called) if you want to get a look around, or get on the free circle tram.

Depends what your into went for my 40th last year, massive sports fan so did the MCG tour, plus checked out the other stadiums in that area and the Etihad in Docklands. Flinders street station,Federatoin Square etc. A nice river boat tour down the Yarra and a tram trip down to St Kilda (very nice bars and cafes and Luna Park ) , and also hired a car to visit Flemington Racecourse and a trip to Ramsey Street on our way back from friends in the north. You could always try the Eureka Skydeck amonst other things, lots to do massive city, plenty of walking if your into that, enjoy!

Be careful with those reviews - hotels are known to write really bad reviews for the competition, and really good reviews for themselves - in order to game the system.

Agree with the others about chapel street for shopping, i also like a visit to
Prahran Market (commercial street), which is just about on chapel street. Its a bit snobby but worth a visit.

Prahran market has market tours, know the person who does them.
Have not been there for yonks myself.
We usually state at the Grand Mecure on Swanston Street because its right in the centre of the shops, Bourke St Mall just a minute away with DJ's Zara and Myer there. Also we like to have a chinese meal in Little Bourke St and its close by as well.
Last time we had a twin room with two teles so it was very good.
Vic Market is worth a visit.
Southbank on Sunday
Botanical gardens if you like that sort of thing
Boat ride up the Yarra

I have stayed at the Citadines hotel just off the CBD . Not that cheap, but it was lovely
as badge would say, brand new then but very nice, so modern.
Do be careful to check out the 'deals', one being pushed for $99 a night quite recently, with research turned out to have a reputation for bedbugs
