Was offered employer sponsorship in Sydney and was more than happy to move there.......however i've just been offered the same in Melbourne.

Been to Sydney before and loved it - never been to Melbourne.

Job in Sydney is higher paid, but so is the cost of living i guess?

If you were only going for two years where would you choose?

y'know my hubby and I were discussing these two options last night too. We have family in Sydney and hubby likes it there. I liked the feel of Melbourne and felt it was a little less brash.

We came to the conclusion by asking the dog!! She's like the magic 8 ball you can ask her questions and she answers by tail signals. Melbourne was greeted with some tentative tail tip wagging followed by great swishing. Sydney was poised tailed, but not wagging. I wish I had a better empirical way of deciding

I'd do a year in each if you're only there for 2 years.

Both great - I've only visited, not lived there, but from my impressions Melbourne is more UK-like, cooler weather, and lots of stuff around like Great Ocean Road, Dandenongs, Phillip Island, Ballerat - stuff to do in every direction every weekend.

Sydney has to be done too, better city centre and maybe better if you're young and single, but not quite as much stuff surrounding it - blue mountains are great as are the beaches - but theres no equivalent to the great ocean road or the penguins of Phillip Island.

A year in each place is the ideal on a 2 year visa. I love both places, difficult to chose between the two, and you won't regret either.

Come to Melbourne after 2 years you won't want to leave.
Go to Sydney you will enjoy your 2 years and then want to leave.

We may also have the same dilemma.....

My husband has been offered a job in Melbourne (had the call last night) and also has a number of other possibilities in both Melbourne and Sydney which we should be confirmed this week.

So I am going to watch this thread with interest......

We've been in Sydney over a year now and are absolutely loving it - can't see ourselves ever living anywhere else. Loads and loads of places to go at weekends - Blue Mountains to the west, Royal National Park to the south, Kuringai National Park to the north plus port Stephens north, Jervis Bay south, beaches national park all around the harbour. We love it.

Have lived in Melbourne for a year also and loved it too but if you're here for a couple of years, already know you loved Sydney, then it's a no brainer for me.

We had the choice too. We felt that if we moved to Sydney we may as well stay in London - busy busy, fast paced, stupidly high house prices.

We now live in Melbourne. The wages are much the same, the traffic is easy, its a beautiful city with stunning beaches, tree-lined boulevards, cafe society, trams, and reasonable house prices when compared to London or Sydney.

My esteemed colleague Geelong Gent once described Sydney as a one-night stand and Melbourne as the girl you would take home to your Mum and now we live here I know what he means.
