I have been interested in emigrating to Australia for a long time now.
I went backpacking over there about 14 years ago and loved the country.
I have identified Melbourne as the place I want to live.
However, my wife is very unsure about the whole thing.
Because of this I would like to plan a fact finding holiday visit to Melbourne to look at the city, find out about housing, schooling, IT work, particularly SAP/Microsoft. Maybe 3 weeks in total.
I was last on here about a year ago and I suppose last nights New Life Down Under has re-ignited the flame.
Firstly, has anyone done any fact finding missions, and what in particular did you try to find out about and how did you go about it ?
Is any time of year particualrly good for fact finding ?
I would like to speak possibly to some IT recruitment agencies to get an idea of what the IT market is particulalry like in Melbourne.
We have two children of 5 and 3.
Many Thanks

A good time for fact finding would depend on a lot of things like when you want to move, school holidays for children, etc, etc. They say the best time to look at a house is not when the sun is shining and the sky is blue (no comments about Melbourne weather folks) so my initial thought was that if you went in the winter (or middle of the year) you won't be seeing it through rose coloured glasses - just my feeling FWIW.
Lots of IT people post on the forum so I'll leave it to them for more specific advice about jobs, job market etc. Have you tried?

Chipster,
My wife and I (left the kids with grand parents) went to Brisbane for 2 weeks to do our research.
We visited Real Estate agents and looked around a number of properties, checked out the local schools, cars, banking, bought a UBD (A to Z) to help us pinpoint areas back home, visited supermarkets and did comparisons on prices etc etc.
In fact we did so much we only had one day to crash on the beach and relax. 3 weeks should give you a week or so to relax and sight see a bit. I would say go in the spring or autumn if you are taking the kids.
