Thought you meant that. And I think that is a bit mean me old mucker.
UK - longer days. Even if the temp was 13-16 in both, the temperature would hit that for many more hours in the UK June than in the Melbourne June, and the Melbourne night could be a lot colder. Nice try! Sorry - didn't know what came over me, knew it was just for kicks.:p |

I don't think 32C days are referred to as 'warm'.
London has a July average max of 22C & Melbourne a January average of 26C - but Melbourne's warmer months last a lot longer. This January in Melbourne was average 27.5C.

Quite often on the forecast, a day - I can't remember the exact band now - this is where I get myself in trouble - which might be 30 something will be described as a warm day. The word hot is not bandied about willy-nilly is what I am saying. In the UK anything over 30 would be a rarity and considered hot (despite scorchers in recent years) and your grandmother would be checking her will and her money in her tin under the bed. It would be all over the newspapers and every news photographer would be standing by every public fountain in Hyde Park for the first opportunity to get their bikini shot for the day. |

Re: Melbourne or Brisbane
Am really worried now that I might have made a mistake by choosing Melbourne, the weather sounds cold. I would hate to move thousands of miles from cold & wet to another version of cold and wet! Please someone be more clear, is Melbourne as cold as described here?

Yes it has some unpleasant days - so does everywhere. Melbourne has what feels to me like a 'real' summer - with long warm light evenings to go with it. |

The weather is changeable but not unpredictable. You can get a huge variation of temps between days and even within a day. I've seen the cool change drop the temps by more than 22 degrees in about 2 hours. One day may be 42 the next may be 22. |
Re: Melbourne or Brisbane
Oh that's not so bad. I guess cold is relative; it must feel very cold for any one from other parts of oz but those temperatures aren't so low compared to UK. I know we rain for sustainance of life but i've just about had enough of rain!

Re: Melbourne or Brisbane
A bizarre feature that I've seen a few times here (about 5 or 6 in the last 6 years) is where a warm change comes in the evening. A few years back New Year's Eve was in the high 20s but from about 6pm the temps rose, hitting 40 about mid-night.

It's not cold as in, - 'I'll literally get frostbite if I stand here too long'. It's not bone-chillingly cold - if it feels that way, it's because your metabolism has not kicked in, it's 6am and you got out of bed only 30mins before. I've never used a winter coat - only at stadia. Never used a scarf, nor gloves. |

Did you see the news last February, Bush fires swept through the outskirts of Melbourne with devistating effects - -Now does that sound like it would happen in Barron in Furness? Melbourne was the hottest place on earth that day 46.4 Degrees! This happens regulary here in Victoria subject to extreme temperatures and dry conditions, the only other places on the planet similar are California and Greece. When people say Melbourne is Cold, they refer to the fact on Australian standards in Winter, Melbourne is gernerally colder than most other cities, but that would be comparible to a spanish Winter not a British one. Have a look at our weather since Nov-March November Average - 27.1 December Average - 25.9 Jan Average - 27.5 Feb Average - 28.2 March Average (to date) - 26.8 These are just averages, every one of these months will see heatwaves where temp can be in the high 30's or early 40's for a few days. but also what Melbourne is famous, by the next day cooler days can kick in where the temp will probably be in the low 20's which is cooler (not cold), belive me it can be a relief sometimes. If you want year round warm weather I suggest you move to Brisbane, but be aware it has far less character than melbourne as the change in seasons refelects on the personality of a city! |

Avg Max/Min October - 19.9 / 10.6 September - 18.6 / 9.9 August - 16.9 / 9.2 July - 15.2 / 8.2 June - 15.6 / 7.7 May - 17.9 / 9.6 April - 21.0 / 11.6 ...6 months below 20C, if that's your idea of cold...head north! |
