Melbourne but then I am biased. Melbourne weather is great, you get a few hot days in summer when inside is the place to be, well for me anyway and everyone heads off to the beach in the evening and because we have daylight saving its very pleasant. After the hot days the days are still warm enough for the beach but more bearable. Autumn is a great season in Melbourne

Being a GP you would be welcome to work here anyway so check out the employment opportunities.

A clinic near me on the Peninsula has been trying to get a GP to join them for years now and does not take any new patients due to shortage. All the outer areas of Melbourne need GPs due to growth.

Berwick which is on your list of clinics is a very nice area and has good schools and is not that far from the beach.

Melbourne has four seasons of the year and winter is nothing like a UK winter in fact I do not own an overcoat.

Brisbane is way too humid for me in summer. I can take the heat but not the humidity. Its a nice city though and I would say its a bit plastic looking with all its houses on canals.

Good luck, have a look at realestate.com.au and also google street view to get an idea of the areas.

Autumn is definitely Melly's best season.

And when people say Melly's weather is the same as the UK, I think they must be talking about the weather in June :D

How about the public infrastructure comparison of both the cities
1. Rush in trains / Connectivity of buses to train stations
2. Sports facilities / swimming pools
3. Queue time at hospitals
4. Schools, etc

Many thanks guys, now Im struggling as too many options :)

Petals thanks for the info. its a harsh thing to say but good to know there is shortage of GPs as my other dilemma is whether to move now or 2012 (when I hopefully get my permanent residency here in case Oz is not my cup of tea) You say you dont own an overcoat but I see people always describing Melb as 'bone chilling' you must be missing British weather then :)

Fred, I have only lived in Cumbria for 3 yrs (originally from India) and from what you guys are saying Brisbanes weather is more like the Indian weather with heat and humidity.

As far as the rest of it is concerned I think Brisbane has everything what Melbourne has to offer except in a small scale. Does that apply to crime as well? Is Brisbane a lot safer?

Peter that was useful info. about allied. However thats a risk I have to take perhaps signing a shorter contract and then shopping around in the meantime, merely having a look may not be of much use as these things manifest only once u start working. For this purpose Melbourne might be better with more options workwise.

Man this is harder than I thought! :)

I moved to Brisbane with my family (teenage children). I had the choice between Brisbane and Melbourne and chose Brisbane because of the climate. Having visited Melbourne on a few occasions, I'm willing to admit I made a mistake. I'm stuck here at least until the kids are at Uni.

I miss architecture, seasons, culture, shopping, decent transport infrastructure, daylight savings, career opportunities, walking (too hot in brissie). All infinitely better in Melbourne. In Melbourne you can go out in the evening and have a restaurant meal after 9 p.m. In Brisbane, that's bedtime.

As someone paying high rent, and wanting to buy a house soon, I can't see any real difference between housing costs in Brisbane and Melbourne. Salaries are better in Melbourne though. So although I like Brisbane, I think Melbourne is a much more liveable city.

Re overcoats, I reckon I would wear one around 2 to 3 mornings per year and thats only because we watch our son playing football in the winter and stand around for almost 2 hours around 8 to 10.30 am on a Sunday morning.

Rest of the winter you can easily get by with a light jumper and a leather jacket.

My friend's son is an specialist doc icu and anaesthetics here in Melbourne at a large hospital, and he was offered oodles to go to Brisbane but he says Melbourne has the lifestyle he likes plus its better for him career wise. He gets a $1000 a shift if he fills in at the local private hospital which is not bad in spare time.

Crime is everywhere unfortunately and everyone has to be a bit streetwise on public transport and late at night just like every city in the world. Given the four million people that live in Melbourne I think its a pretty safe place but of course the media plays up the bad, same with Brisbane.

To the op who thought I was thinking of the Gold Coast saying plastic,:D no I was thinking more the people really and their flashy things and Queenslanders are just different to Melbourne people same with Sydney different again. Houses with pristeen lawns one inch cut etc. Of course I know the older Queenslander suburbs are lovely and if one has an arm and a leg then they are the way to go.:D

I didnt really search this forum thoroughly before posting my query as I would like some specific advice in choosing the right place to move so thanks in advance.

I have been offered a GP job by a corporate firm in Melbourne but they have practices in Brisbane too. Im struggling to decide where to move and was hoping someone could give some advice please.

My passion is for 6 a side soccer either indoor or astro turf, I dont mind sunshine as I dont need a tan :) and Im not a beach bum but still love the beach and I do enjoy fell running.

I understand Melbourne weather can be appalling at times! but is it that bad (Currently I live in Cumbria where is rains atleast about 3 times/wk)

I'd probably be married before I make the move down under and the practices in Melbourne are in the following areas:

http://www.alliedmedicalgroup.com.au...-locations.asp

Sorry I dont have a clue looking at the map which is commutable etc.

So kindly suggest Melbourne or Brisbane.
The place to be for football or soccer as they call it :)
The practices to suggest to them which can be commutable.

Regards,

Pepene.

Hi, what a coincidence! I have a job with allied medical too and had to choose between the places.I got conflicting advice re Brisbane vs melbourne. I settled for Melbourne eventually because i have young children and from general consensus, Melbourne is good for activities and more multicultural but am not confident about the weather too! we did a recci last year and visyed both places and I was even more confused cos both places are lovely although my son found Brisbane too hot, but i loved it!

I think Melbourne's winter is a lot closer to the UK's winter than many Australian cities - but actually, quite a bit warmer, especially if recent UK winters are the yardstick. Summer - no comparison at all. Melbourne's summers are hot and long, with the occasional cool day. The UK's summers are mild and temperate, barely warm - in climate terms. Even a 32 degree day in Melbourne is called warm (not hot).

Not sure whether or not my example is really indicative of Melbourne as a whole... as I say, I don't know it well at all. But I reckon it is probably fair to say that Brisbane 5km+ outwards is cheaper than Melbourne equivalent...

Some good points. I think you have to be careful with some of the outer suburbs in Melbourne.

All strange things but I guess that's what growing up somewhere can do to you and maybe why some British feel so out of place in Australia.....doesn't "feel" right.

You know, a lot of Victoria is just nasty twisted Eucalypt - not lush at all sometimes and the drought has not helped. In fact, squint, replace the Eucalypt with European species and my village could be the UK.

But I don't mind the Dandenongs and the Yarra Valley where there is more rainfall.

There are plenty of Melbourne suburbs where you could be in the UK - often those adverts on TV showing average houses in old streets look quite run down - not much of a house or a nature strip. Of course the houses are still detached. Then you get the houses in Melbourne where you could be in Islington or Richmond, London.

I don't think 32C days are referred to as 'warm'.

London has a July average max of 22C & Melbourne a January average of 26C - but Melbourne's warmer months last a lot longer.

This January in Melbourne was average 27.5C.

Thought you meant that. And I think that is a bit mean me old mucker.

UK - longer days. Even if the temp was 13-16 in both, the temperature would hit that for many more hours in the UK June than in the Melbourne June, and the Melbourne night could be a lot colder. Nice try!

Sorry - didn't know what came over me, knew it was just for kicks.:p
