I found the statement "Adelaide has more work prospects" very hard to believe. So I did a wee search.

I think it gives us a rough idea of the work situation in both cities:

On Seek (Australia's largest online job site) there are the following:

5375 jobs in Adelaide. (NO typo - only five thousand and seventy five jobs).

VS

Meblourne, which has 39,878 positions.

There are 44 science related position in Adelaide.

VS

211 in Melbourne.

Therefore, to suggest there are more work prospects in Adelaide is incorrect & misleading .

Yes, there are not more jobs, but one thing is that less people go for them, so that can mean there are better opportunities....in some fields anyway... and very hard to be employed if you're not "local" in some areas...

Couldn't agree more - go where your feel the best place is for your potential jobs. The rest will work itself out.

It's only my experience (and other people will be different) but it can be quite hard to get a good - well paid - job here [Adelaide] and as many people will tell you it can be difficult to break into the jobs market here. This will not be the same for all jobs/industries, but it's what I was told when I was looking in my area. But, again as they say: once you're in, you're in. I'll see whether that part's true in a few months when my contract's due to finish.

Our view is that after moving a several thousand kms across the world to get to Australia, what's another thousand kms in the scheme of things, if it doesn't work out here.

Best of luck with your visa application - after all that hassle, we found the move the easy bit.

Thanks so much for all your replies its nice to talk to people who have already made the move.
We are trying to get our SIR visa at the moment.
When we first started this I thought it would be fairly easy to go to Australia as we had good careers, but I was wrong. Never mind we will get there in the end.
Will let you know how we get on and thanks again for all your help.

I had a feeling someone might try and argue from that angle.

Lets see:

Adelaide has a population of 1.1 million people. Melbourne has a population of 3.8 million

At any one time there are roughly 8 times more advertised positions in Melbourne. The population of Melb is only 4 times more. So please don't try and suggest one has a better chance of securing employment in Adelaide, when infact your chances of securing work in Melbourne is double that of Adelaide.

Lets also not forget the fact that Melbourne, no doubt, would have better quality positions as it's a major business hub of Australia where many companies head offices are based. Adelaide & Brisbane have branches, Melbourne and SYdney have head offices.

Melbourne is home to Australia's busiest seaport and much of Australia's automotive industry, which include Ford and Toyota manufacturing facilities, and the engine manufacturing facility of Holden. It is home to many other manufacturing industries, along with being a major business and financial centre.

Melbourne is also a major technology hub, with an ICT industry that employs over 60,000 people (one third of Australia's ICT workforce), has a turnover of $19.8 billion and export revenues of $615 million.

Melbourne retains a significant presence of being a financial centre for Asia-Pacific. Two of the big four banks, NAB and ANZ, are headquartered in Melbourne. The city has carved out a niche as Australia’s leading centre for superannuation (pension) funds, with 40 per cent of the total, and 65 per cent of industry super-funds.

Tourism plays an important role in Melbourne's economy, with approximately 7.6 million domestic visitors and 1.88 million international visitors in 2004.

The city is headquarters for many of Australia's largest corporations, including five of the ten largest in the country (based on revenue) (ANZ, BHP Billiton, the National Australia Bank, Rio Tinto and Telstra); as well as such representative bodies and thinktanks as the Business Council of Australia and the Australian Council of Trade Unions.

It has thrice shared top position in a survey by The Economist of the World's Most Livable Cities on the basis of its cultural attributes, climate, cost of living, and social conditions such as crime rates and health care, in 2002, 2004 and 2005.

Melbourne is also known as an Australian cultural and sport capital. In recent years, the city has claimed the SportsBusiness title "World's Ultimate Sports City".

Re: MELBOURNE OR ADELAIDE

I have never heard Melbourne's claim to being 'cultural capital' qualified, it's just put out there and believed to be gospel.

Adelaide hosts Australia's most respected Festival of Arts (undisputed) and also the country's largest fringe festival. It also has the highly respected Womadelaide and Cabaret Festivals. There is also 'Tasting Australia' - a food event that is anticipated by food experts the world over. There's much more too, but you get the point..Adelaide is no slouch in the culture department.

Adelaide is also on the Economist's list of most liveable cities (in top ten, last three years running). Most Australian capitals are on it.

Haven't been to or lived in Adelaide, but Melbourne has plenty enough life for me, mainly because I can afford the lifestyle due to the good job market.
