Re: MELBOURNE 2009
Hey everyone
My name is Lucy. My husband Pete and our two children (aged 4 and 6) are relocating to melbourne at the end of the year. I am a nurse, hubby is a HGV driver. Just thought I'd introduce myself. ;) We will be renting once we get there. We are still unsure whether to ship over our belongings. We don't own a house here, we private rent. So we wont be taking loads of $$$$$$ with us. Just savings and money from selling the car and motorbike, also a few other bits and pieces, not to mention a good sense of humour. If you know of anything that could help, i'd love to hear from you all. Also, if there is any nurses out there that can give me a little insight to how nursing differs over there, I would be really greatful. Our interests are: Motorbikes, punk music, bands & gigs, swimming, water sports, having a laugh and drinking wine aplenty!!!! Hahaha:p Sending big love to you all - coolio el smoochio. Thanx loads to everyone. Lucy and Pete. xoxoxox:blink::thumbsup: |

Re: MELBOURNE 2009
Hi everyone
I'm Charlene, my OH is Chris. We are arriving in Melbourne on 12th March with a PR visa having never set foot in Oz before. We have are now starting to get excited about this whole adventure as the departure date starts to get closer and the list of things to do looks bigger and bigger 'cos we haven't done any of it! We booked our flights and Grand Prix tickets first as they were obviously the most important things to sort out!! Then we started looked for short term accomodation and as we decided that at leaset one of our jobs was probably going to be in the CBD we wanted something as central as possible. So, as dreamlike as the beaches of Carrum and Seaford looked we decided they were to be saved for the weekends and we managed to find a serviced apartment for $108 per night in South Yarra. We have even found it on Google Street View so we know what the road looks like (although the house is hidden behind a tree) - if you have not already used it, I highly recommend it. I have already "walked" to the top of the road to the train station and know where the local convenience store is! Hubby has agreed to sell his car to my dad which is a weight off our minds, mine was up for sale and got stolen during a test drive last week which was a stress I really could have done without so I have lost my car & 2 evenings at the police station making statements. The one big thing left to arrange is letting our house. We have had one person who is seriously interested but his lease runs 'til June so the agent has asked for another week before I throw it open to the others in the area. Other than that I am trying to think happy thoughts of what I am going to take in my hand luggage and which items of clothing to take in my suitcase and which to ship. Nice thread, keep it up everyone. Charlene |

Re: MELBOURNE 2009
Hi Everyone,
We are Paul (43, IT Manager) and partner Mel (41, Housewife) and are just having our first thoughts about moving to Melbourne from Scotland. Our eldest daughter is moving out there in July 09 and we're thinking of following her but apparently it's better if I do it before I'm 45 so we're going to have to get a move on! We'll be bringing our other daughter who'll be 17 by then and our son who'll be 4 Looking for ideas about places to live which will be: 1 - safe enough for a toddler 2 - exciting enough for a teenager 3 - close enough to work (sub-1 hour travel if possible) 4 - within our budget On the budget I'm currently estimating the sale of my house here will free up about $140k (Aus$) + I'm obviously going to have to get a job and a mortgage for the rest but currently have no idea what salary to expect or what the mortgage conditions are in Australia. So am kind of in the dark as to what house price range to be looking at. I'd really rather not rent and have to move again with a young child. Our eldest daughter is going to be living in Richmond but I suspect that may be out of our price range. My partners sister, hubby and toddler son are also considering the move. Cheers, Paul |

For current costs of Australian accommodation, both for rental and purchase go to http://www.realestate.com.au.
You can search on your budget or location. It has the same listings as Realestate.com.au but I find they are presented better. |

Re: MELBOURNE 2009
Hi Suzyambrose and everyone ,
And goodluck to all of you whom are moving to some part of Victoria. I my wife and young family have lived in Frankston and Carrum downs over the last few years ( although im currently back in the UK ). We feel its a great area. Its close to the beach, prices for renting and buying are very good, there is a good range of shops ,as well as other regional shopping centres, not too far away, and lots of things for the kids to do. Also you are only around an hour from Melbourne on the train, and about an hour to the airport, what more do you want ?? Its not a perfect suburb, but is there one ?:p If you have any questions , feel free to PM me .. Cheers , and good luck.. |

Re: MELBOURNE 2009
Hi Everyone
This is my first post on BE after reading loads of posts silently for months. We applied for our PR in Aug 08 and are now patiently waiting....!!! We (that is my hubbie (37) and I (33)) are planning on going to Melbourne and fingers crossed hope to be out there in September or October later this year. We have been looking at various suburbs from Mentone and Mordialloc down to Chelsea so if anyone knows what it's like to live in these places it would be great to hear from you. We definitely want to be near the beach!! Nic |
