Question medicare?

My Dad is coming out for his first visit to Australia for about 50 yrs!! He can't wait to see how much Perth has changed.
Anyway, what he wants to know is if he needs to see a GP while he's here does he just pay and then claim back from his insurance or is he covered by Medicare for anything? He'll be over here for 8 wks altogether.

can only comment on our recent experience with elderly relatives visiting, they had to see a gp because they had left some medication behind in the uk they had to pay and were told they could claim it back on their insurance.

I do know they had to pay a lot out in travel insurance due to there age and ailments, the best price they got was via age concern.

is your dad an australian citizen? not sure if that makes a difference.

He would be covered under the reciprocal health care agreement which would cover all emergency treatment. (Assuming he is entitled to NHS treatment in the UK) He could claim back through a medicare office here using his passport.

For some more info

Thumbs up Re: medicare?

Thanks for the info. I presume he could claim back anything by post as he's coming to stay with us in Karratha and we don't have a Medicare office here. Hopefully,he'll be OK as he's a fairly healthy 74 yr old and has made sure he has enough of his medication to last.
He's not an Australian citizen, he went to Perth and Melbourne when he was at sea and has always wanted to come back for a visit so he was so pleased when we emigrated here 18 months ago.
He has a photo of Flinders St in Melbourne and the tallest building is a chruch tower!! and the only traffic is a couple of cars and a pushbike

LOL he will be in for a shock then

just a tip tell him to bring a list of his meds just in case any do get lost in transit then he show the gp what hes taking.

OH's parents luggage got left in Hong Kong on their way back which was ok as they were back in the UK but if it had been this way all their meds were in the suitcase ... in their case 2 months worth wouldnt fit in their hand luggage!
