Medicals/selling essex house
Hello
I am based in Side, Turkey where my husband runs a 5* hotel on the Med. I am originally from Essex (no jokes please) and my husband did not want to live in the UK so we have decided to head for the Gold Coast. We employed the services of a lawyer in Brisbane and they have said that Adelaide wants our medical and police reports. Has anyone been turned down at this stage?
And yes, I am also going to have to sell our house in Essex but do we have to pay capital gains tax? Does anyone know?

we are at the stage of our medicals being checked over and if it doesn't work ou to their satisfaction then I guess they will turn us down..don't forget you arn't allowed to read the medical so you don't know what's in them..
as regards the house i would advise a specialist in this area as with you being off shore may have an effect..

what if there are no probs with the medical though - can they still refuse you?

Based on what Ive seen on this site, if they have asked you for your medicals thats a positive step and if your medicals are ok and nothing goes wrong then you should be ok - check other posts but I think Im correct.

If you sell the house before you get to Australia, no CGT due in Australia.
If you sell it after you become resident in Australia you have to value all your investments at the point you become resident in $A and say you sell it 2 months later, and it gone up by $5,000, you only liable for the extra $5,000.
Any capital gain you make before arriving in Australia is of no interest to the Australian tax authorities.
Cannot help with UK or Turkish Tax people.
P.S. I'm no tax expert just do my own taxes.

You need to look at Inland Revenue form Helpsheet IR283 http://www.inlandrevenue.gov.uk/sa/f..._01-02.htm#cgt and associated links. You may be exempt from UK CGT if you left the UK before 1997 or have been non-resident for 5 years by the time you live in UK again or a few other exemption.
