Default Medical costs under PR

Has anyone switched from a 457 to PR? We are contemplating doing this and understand that we will then have to pay our own medical insurance (payed by my employer under a 457). Approximate cost for a family of 4?

Take a look on a few insurance sites and see what it comes up with. Here's a few to start you off:

http://www.medibank.com.au/Client/St...etailHome.aspx
http://www.nrma.com.au/pub/nrma/heal...al-cover.shtml
http://www.iselect.com.au/private-he...ospital-cover/

You should also note that you will be entitled to full medicare once you have lodged your PR application. You will need proof that you have applied, so may have to wait for acknowledgement

Not quite. Your employer will no longer be obliged to provide medical cover. However, it's open to the employer to give you medical insurance as part of your remuneration package - cost will be cheaper once you have PR as you will be Medicare eligible.

Once you have PR you don't have to have medical insurance, but you should investigate thoroughly the Lifetime Health Cover and medicare levy surcharge implications of not having it.
