Hi,
This my first time on this forum. My family and I are emigrating to Aus in August and we are validating our visas in February. Can anyone tell me please can we take marmite, bisto, and tea bags for family members in February. The travel agent says definitely NO but others say its o.k if you declare them. Any ideas???

Processed food, e.g. tinned and packeted stuff is allowed (e.g. Marmite, beans etc. What is not allowed is raw foodstuffs like apples, bananas, meat, herbs etc. I think teabags will be fine as they have also been processed. Either way the worse that will happen is that the offending item(s) will be taken away for disposal. Hope this helps!

You can buy marmite here in oz, or if your desperate for a concoction of yeast extract theres always vegemite which tastes similar but about 90% less salty.
I was in canada and had some marmite and my ozzie partner made me some toast with marmite. She thought it was the same as vegemite and so she spread the marmite thickly on my toast, eeeeeewww !!!!
So that should tell you how much less salty vegemite is

Is it possile to get industrial sized catering jars of marmite before leaving or will customs frown on such antics, and could there be an allowance for personal use for each passenger?

Processed foods are normally allowed.

Tring to be as unbiased as possible, but imho Vegemite is WAY better tasting than Marmite. Marmite to me is kinda like diet coke.... it tastes ok as your eating it but has this horrible aftertaste. Neither Vegemite or Marmite should be spread thickly on anything ever I think.... both have quite strong tastes.
We have to get our parents in Oz to send over huge jars of Vegemite to us as it`s very hard to find here, and then you can only get it in minute jars (ie tesco).
Vegemite also has alot better vitamin amounts in.

You've sent me to the kitchen cupboard and i'll have to take issue with that sweeping generalisation, where's the vitamin b12 in vegemite, and theres more energy and protein in marmite.
Lets agree ozzies like vegemite and brits like marmite, its probably got more to do with what you were brought up with than actual taste.
(and vegemite tastes like watered down marmite)
