Thought this is good to show just just how big Australia is. Might help someone get their head around the size of the place.

Thanks for this. I guess you know it's "big" but to see such comparisons makes it more real.

One of the clearest memories from my first trip to Aus once watching the map on the seatback video in the plane. We crossed the coast near Port Hedland, northern WA, and I thought Hooray, its Asutralia at last....then I realised how much further we still had to travel, right across to the East Coast.....and onwards, as I was heading for Tassie. I think it was another 6 hours or more before we landed at Melbourne.

"Badge, its Chris. I'm coming to Australia to see you next week."

"Great. When are you arriving in Melbourne?"

"Err..I'm getting in to Sydney".

The inference is that a) You can pick them up b) They'll jump on the bus.

A friend of our asked hubby for advice about his plans for his holiday in Aus. Got the map out and said "flying into Perth, collecting the car, driving to Adelaide and then Melbourne, leaving the car and flying up to Darwin, collecting another car, driving to Uluru and then across to Brisbane, drive down to Sydney and flying home from there" Bloody hell says hubby, how long you going for? THREE WEEKS came the answer :scared: Didn't believe hubby when he explained just how long that trip would take :D

If you don't mind driving, you'd do it though - and with time to spare too.

He was expecting to spend a few days in each place :D In fairness he hadn't worked out distances, just looked at the map in an atlas - He thought Perth to Adelaide would take about three hours

Same here!

Another perspective is that I'm going to drive around the outside and a bit in the middle and I'm estimating 27,000km :) Of course that doesn't include detours for getting lost.

Thanks for that it helps conceptualise the distance :)

Doesn't look as far now to travel from Melbourne to Perth - after my London to Athens trip.

Thanks for that, I've attached the only one I had before and that astounds people when they see it.
