Manly (again)
Apologies for banging on yet again about Manly, but it might save some souls from making a dreadful mistake.
Just got back from a meeting by the beach called by various councillors and the Mayor, Dr Peter MacDonald, to protest the opening of yet another pub.
Several speakers talked about their fear of walking around the place at night - the drunken fights, vomit, glass etc. Apparently the street cleaners will not start before about 5am due to the violence.
After yet another night of fighting and drunken behaviour until dawn we are giving up, dropping the lease at a cost of several thousand dollars and getting out of the place.
Be warned!

Re: Manly (again)
I reckon it's much better in Manly QLD
Newcomers complain here that everything shuts up early and everyone is in bed by nightfall (A slight exageration of course)

The Mayor says that it started to go badly wrong when the Greiner government (remember Nick Greiner?) introduced the 24hr alcohol policy. Since then the binge drinking mentality has just taken over in some places, and Manly is known for miles around now as the "party place". All the yobs flood in from those suburbs where they aren't allowed to cause trouble.

Re: Manly (again)
Manly itself away from the Corso is a really nice spot, but I think Rog has hit the nail on the head with his last post. The geography of the peninsula and the lack of any transport infrastructure late night, means that all the hoons from surrounding suburbs (which have little or no nightlife) descend upon the place and generally play up.
A leaf out of the Singaporean book:
They had an issue with locals urinating in stairwells. They installed cctv, captured the offenders on film, then broadcast the offenders with name, address, place of work on the 6 o'clock news. The issue dried up somewhat after that.
