I'll be travelling from Melbourne to Kuala Lumpur. What are Malaysia Airlines like?

Re: Malaysia Airlines
I took the night flight between KUL-MEL, departs after 10pm, a couple of years ago and hated it! Cabin lights were still on full beam and meal service still ongoing 3.5 hours after departure...WHY!?

If you take a night flight you have to expect the evening meal - next to getting comfortable in the economy seats, its no biggy.
Malaysian are fine (better than qantas), although I'd say KL has gone down hill in recent years (I used to prefer it to Changi).

Coz it takes a while to reach altitude, then serve meals, then dish out the wine, coffee, etc., then collect the detritus.

Business, got a bit of crab shell in my entrée which gave me a (tiny) cut on my lip. Staff were great and found (God knows where from!) a bottle of Dom Perignon, sealed it in the required clear plastic bag and gave it to me with their apologies. I took it to a street party in Liverpool for her Maj's jubilee and got pissed as, ended up acceding to multiple requests to sing Tie Me Kangaroo Down, Sport. What a wally

They used to have a shocking reputation for cutting the airpacks in the cabin - reduces the amount of oxygen in the air and keeps their costs down ( to put it very simplistically). Most people wouldn't notice, they'd just nod off a bit quicker, but if you are prone to asthma or breathing issues, or prone to fainting, its a real problem. I spent a flight from KL to Aus feeling like death would be a good option, dizzy, light headed etc. Every time I went in the loo I was fine. I was travelling with an airline pilot friend and he quickly nailed the problem - cos the airpacks in thr toilets can't be cut. This was about 8-9 years back and he said at that time they were known to the CAA for exactly that issue, and he made a report himself on his return.

We flew LHR-KUL-SYD with them in economy last June and they were ok. Nothing flash but no issues either. Usually reasonably priced - their newer planes have all the mod cons incl USB ports, good seat back tellies etc. Food is so so, but then so is most airline food in economy.

we flew with them last year, having used them a lot over the last 12 or so years.
I have to conclude they must have spent all their budget on new planes (very nice) as they had nothing left over for food- which was appalling to say the least. Dinner was a wrap of indeterminate filling- like the awful stuff they serve on Qantas domestic flights.
