On our first trip (together) to Oz we went Perth-Adelaide-Brisbane-Auckland-Perth.

We went to the Sunshine Coast but we didn't like it as much as Perth because we felt it was just too humid. We have small children (well only one then, but 3 now - maybe there isn't that much to do in Perth, but makes for a happy marriage ) and we weren't sure they would cope with it.

Added to that I was divebombed twice in the dark by a rhinocerous beetle, and spent my time at the Hyatt Coolum dodging cane toads.

Mrs J over and out.

Yes I am a wimp

Have dealt with red backs and brown snakes here in Perth. Tumpty tum.

I totally agree, what one loves another hates, so only way to make an opinion is to take a look for yourself!!

When we were moving out here to Adelaide, it was getting such a HUGE slateing on this site and we really started to worry about coming here, but I would say 80% of what was written was total crap, and we are very happy here in Adelaide and making the most of our new lives!!!

Seems times have changed and it is Perth getting the bashing now, no doubt give it another few weeks and it will be another area in Oz!!

Either way no matter where you move to in Oz, some will love it some will hate it, some will stay some will move to another area, some will return to the UK, what ever YOU decide to do it is your life so stop moaning about it and just get on with it!!! There is no right or wrong in any of the above!!!

There is a significant difference between Redcliffe and Deception Bay in terms of demographics, location and environs. You cant lump them together.

Well all, i know people get a bit upset about slagging off there new home as we all have taken the leap of faith to come half way round the world for a better life but as it has been said perth is not for everyone, me and the other half have been here 16 months now and we both have different oppins about perth, i think perth is pretty chilled and i like the work and have made a lot of new friends here but the missus travelled round aus with her first job and she loves brissy she also thinks perth is a bit boring and there is not alot to do here, have nothing against brissy as i have not been there but i would be put off by the humidity.

hope everyone ends up where they wil be happy, where ever it may be

andy

Brilliant. 82 replies and none of them answer or help the OP at all. That has to be some sort of BE record. If you want to ask a question about Perth and start the oldest argument in the book then start your own threads. Is there anyone now on the Sunshine Coast who can reply to OP

Hi

Hate to get dragged into this but if it helps someone with their choice then its worth it. I am an Aussie living in the UK and about to move back. To where who knows, but think it may be Perth. I visited Brisbane/Gold Coast 1 month ago as we thought we may move there. Personally its not for us. Nothing outrageously bad but just a few things. Brisbane is lovely but no beaches. The 'beaches' up and down the Brisbane coast area are tidal (aka mudflats). The city itself is pretty but not exactly crazy in my 32 year old opinion. The south bank is lovely but again very well behaved. The Gold Coast felt souless to us. If you like beaches/casinos/neon signs etc (think Vegas) and lots of retirees then this place is for you. Felt very commercial but not in a good way for us. THe Sunhine Coast is pretty but again we felt that unless you wanted to hang on the beach or watch a movie then you may stuggle to find things to do. It is definately the land of the BIG! Big Banana/Prawn/Pineapple (insert your own aussie icon) which just felt a little cheesy for us. I think we all forget that it is only relatively recently that Perth has become really popular with Aussies and Brits so i think it will take time to fall into line with the rest of the country but QLD had been popular (due to proximity) to Aussies and Brits for a long time so may seem more 'ahead'.
We are hoping that a move to Perth may give us the chilled out Aussie lifestyle with the beautiful beaches etc but with the benefits of a city lifestyle. Heres hoping.
Hope this helps, but again its just my opinion and realistically unless you can say specifically what you want and don't want from a move peoples opinions are just that.

Totally agree, as per normal this has turned into a Perth vs Brisbane argument :-((

To the original OP - we live on the sunshine coast at Mountain Creek. The local schools have a good reputation and our son is at the high school. There's a lovely public pool next to the school which does lessons (which I attend). We are approx 5 - 10 minutes from the beaches at Mooloolaba and Alexander Headland as well as lots of others which are even nicer.

There are plenty of shops nearby including the Sunshine Plaza in Maroochydore. There is also lots of building going on and there is planned massive expansion in the next few years. Caloundra and Kawana look to almost double in size so should be good for work prospects.

The train line to Brisbane doesn't come right to the coast but it is only a short drive to Woombye or Nambour, not sure how long it takes to get into Brisbane but it's probably quicker to drive which takes just over the hour.

If you have any other questions then please ask.

I've never been to Perth, I'm sure it is a lovely place and there's lots of people who love living there. We chose the SC and we like it, I'm sure if we'd chosen Perth we would have liked that as well

Horses for courses and all that

Nope but neighbours opposite moved over from perth 2 mos ago. There not on acerage like us, so reckon house prices are much cheaper considering they paid $670,000 thats saying something. More to do's another comment but then the first 2 months anywhere would be full of new actiivity. Would agree far more in reach of here than in perth tho, youve got GC, bris city which is 3X perth pop, 2 lots of ranges hinterland, a 3 hour drive in winter to southern downs which can get frosty for a nice cool break, $90 flights to syd/melb.

Climate is not really like perths ( yes I have been there) winter here is the dry season unlike perths. Summer humidity, well last 2 summers barely got over 28 not humid due to the lower rainfall we've got, really mild, thats southern qld tho. Cairns and other northern regions have stinker summers, horrible wet humidity for quite a chunk of the year, unless you really enjoy heat stick to the southern ends and if the typical storm season jan feb returns here then those months will be humid.

Cheaper, not sure, petrol about $1.29, food rip off here too, especially in holiday areas like this, houses dear for qld, not expensive for people used to sydney perth prices. Work depends what you do, really look into it and keep in mind its a holiday area but thousands commute too.

Excuse typing worse than ever small op on finger 2 days ago

I was having a bad day yesterday. Some bright spark decided a workday would be a good idea to remodel the office and my head was spinning with the noise. Sorry. I can tell you are not a regular on here though, as most threads go spiralling off topic for one reason or another. I guess there are not that many people who have made that move, though, due to the lack of answers.
