Last minute flights more expensive?

Last minute flights more expensive?
Is it possible to get late deals on flights in or from oz? It seems prices are higher the later you leave it.
I've been on domestic flights that have at least 10 or 20 seats free. They could sell these off cheap instead of them being empty.
I don't want to book my flights/hols 6 months in advance. Will charter flights come to oz?

Stand by flights seem to be very common, and cheap here.
Not sure you would want the average Australian charter flight....

I booked flights a couple of days ago, leaving 18th Jan. The price was the same (more or less) as when I first started looking into them about 6 months ago. Whether or not they would rise sharply a few weeks or days before the flight I don't know though.
