If you do want to save money big time on Veggies go to the markets (boot sales) on Sunday.

[/QUOTE]

It is sad if you have to go to boot sales to pay a realistic price for veggies,
shower gel for a cheap brand $5,
Been shopping today, went to Coles spent $89.79 then had to go to Woolworths spent $143.65 , it seems that you have to check in your post box for the "specials" from the local stores and then spend hours doing the shopping to try and save money.

Don't let Beach Bums see this post, he insists the prices in Australia are the same as UK wholesale prices. !!!

We shop in Melbourne and don't find it that expensive. Supermarkets are good, but there's also lots of large markets (no car boots involved) that sell fantastic fresh produce, meat, seafood etc. etc., South Melbourne Market is a good example. Our local supermarket has a good fresh section plus an Asian Food section where there's lots of fantastic bits and pieces. There is large selection of spices, cheeses etc. etc. both in supermarkets, deli's and markets. Other than Homer Hudson ice-cream, I don't think you'll find too much lacking and you won't need lots of frozen food.

I don't always get to the markets on Sunday, but if I know I'll be going I'll hold off buying my veggies in the supermarket, and wait until Sunday - much cheaper there

Went late night shopping last night at Coles, so kept the receipt for you all:
Here's a few prices:
lettuce (cheap this week) - $1.45
Brushed potatoes 3kg bag - $5.98
Herbs chives (fresh not dried) $1.75
Parsley (fresh) ..................$1.39
Cucumber.........................$1.25
Roma Tomatoes.................$3.65 a kg
Hydroponic tomatoes...........$6.98kg
Eschallots bunch.................$1.45
Herbs Basil (Fresh)..............$1.29
Mushrooms...........................$7.98 kg (usually 6.99kg - sh*te they've put that one up again!)
cauliflower half ...... $1.29
Corn on the cob (4pk) .......$2.87
Red cabbage half ..............$1.33
Flora pro margarine 250grms - %3.98
Smoked salmon (29.99 a kilo from deli) - $6.48

Lays 18pk crisps (special offer/price) $5.00

Cheese (cheap brand -"savings" brand) 500g $3.27
shredded cheese (same brand again) 250g $2.39

Cheese red Leicester 200g----------------$6.65 ($24.99 a kilo)
Cat food (cheap brand) 170g tin (small tins) 40c

Cat litter 15 litre (savings/cheap brand) - $4.40
Free range eggs 6 pk ...........$2.98
Biscuits (mint addictions) - $2.49
Kirks ginger ale one can (375 ml) - 59c
Mr sheen furniture polish - $4.29

Phew - loads more but I'll be here all day trying to type them all in.

For anyone who smokes I'll add this one too - Cigarettes a carton "Horizon 1" brand( low tar) ( 50 pk's - 4 in a carton- 200) $58.80

On average - I spend around $145 a week in Coles (minus top up shopping in the week - like bread and milk etc), this is for two adults and two cats (cat food and litter)minus the "booze" etc

cheers

P.s - booze depends, they are always having offers here in the drive throughs- can be anything fom $26.99(24 can) to 38 dollars (30 pk) 4 X, or Tooheys new

Baileys Irish cream - about $32 a bottle

Try growing a lemon tree and a pot of herbs-low maintenance and really useful.
Pumpkins and other vine fruit grow just as easily. There's nothing like picking a fresh passionfruit off the vine to eat.

We had a small bit of the backyard for the garden and there was always something to eat from it-in fact we normally had to give stuff away. The mulberry tree was great to climb and always gave loads of fruit, the pumpkins were the 'big blues'-delicious roasted or in scones and always enough for at least 4 meals, some people grew mangoes, oranges, even nut trees in their backyards. It wasnt back breaking stuff and fruit/veges seem to love the growing conditions in Oz.
No matter how small your garden space its possible to grow even one or two things that take very little effort and can make your garden look really attractive.

In the UK we really struggle to grow anything without a lot of tlc...so make the most of your nice climate in oZ!

Just outside of London but the price difference is negligable. Costs us £150 per week for 2 adults and three kids, mainly shop at Tescos. Prices remain the same all around and including London, very little difference unless you go further out.

There are cheaper supermarkets but the quality is not as good. For that reason we rarely buy Tesco's Own and stick to branded goods. Saying that there Own brand has been really improving. Waitrose seems to be more expensive especially for meat.

Forget market stall veg unless you are luckly to have a nearby Farmer's Market, not many yet but they are on the increase, most markets near us just sell cheap goods that are end of range stuff etc.
