Hi footie chick

We have been spending, just on food shopping, approx $700.00 per month, this is not including money spent on meals out. This is for 2 adults and 2 children 10 & 11.

Oh I wish I was paying those prices again, try living in USA, the prices are outrageous here. BTW $1.69 is awfully high for lettuce, don't forget to mention that at some time of the year you can pick them up for .29c. Depends on the season. All veggies are dirt cheap in Summer - unless there is a drought.

Default Re: FOR THE LADIES (Grocery prices)

I've paid up to $3 for a lettuce this summer (around $2.89), they are now back to around $1.89, sometimes $2.20 (prices keep altering from week to week in my local store) Coles - also it depends what coles or woolworths you go to, they seem to alter in price from area to area

Potatoes $1.99 a kilo
Tomatoes $6.99 ($8.99 a couple of months back) - gourmet brand, around $3.99 for the Roma tomatoes, can't remember the price of the very cheap ones (don't like the taste of them - so never buy) I think they are around $1.99, or 2.99 a kilo

If you do want to save money big time on Veggies go to the markets (boot sales) on Sunday. There are heaps of stalls in most markets selling veggie produce, local produce - Potatoes instead of paying $1.99 from the supermarket, I can get for 50c a kilo -lettuce anything from 50c to a dollar depending on what time of day it is (it's cheaper to buy at the end of the market day when they are starting to clear up - just before 12)

Supermarkets are the most expensive places to buy your fresh goods.

For fish and prawns - try the wholesale fish markets (also supermarkets fish and prawns are mostly frozen, then defrosted- not really fresh). They are usually held early morning (my one holds it on a Sat), look to see if you have any of these in your area, you'll have to buy in bulk, but perhaps you can split the cost with a friend/neighbour.

Meat - I don't know if the public can go to the wholesalers for this one, but our workplace used to be next to a fresh meat wholesaler who used to supply to the restaurants and ships. Hubby once bought a huge amount of meat from them (I don't eat meat) - prime steak, chicken, sausages, mince etc etc - for $60 (can't remember the exact amount kilo's/amount, but too big of an amount for one family's fridge/freezer - split it with a friend. Lasted him months.

Coffee - seems expensive with you - Nescafe 250g with me is $9 something, sometimes $7.99 . (Cheaper to buy the big tins as well - in bulk)

Thrifty shopping

Good information explains why the bottle shops are bigger than the supermarkets , it cheaper to get legless than eat ?
