Question kettle gone black & brown

Our kettle we brought over from the UK and use here in Sydney. The element part has gone black, and the plastic part an old looking brownish colour.

What is it in the water that makes it go like this and I assume other peoples go the same too?

We are in Perth, (on the mains, not bore), and our Oz-bought plastic kettle went brown inside a while back. I put some lemon juice in it and boiled it a couple of times and it has been fine since then . That must have been a couple of months ago now.

So get some lemon juice into it - but don't forget to rinse it out well.....unless you like lemon tea of course.....

Or white vinegar, diluted, soak a couple of hours.

Plastic kettles tend to go brown inside after prolonged use. I have found this to be true in the UK and Australia. The discolouration can be removed in the short term by scrubbing; in the long term, it will be permanent.

This is usually the result of hard water or a high mineral content.
