We're not shipping anything, we haven't really got anything worth taking! Most of our stuff is second hand anyway so it's on it's last legs. Will take my laptop (of course :D) and clothes and photos but that's about it, just stuff we can fit in our cases really.

I often read posts of people shipping out all their belongings but I dont think anyone has gone with just their suitcase.

Hubby and I are doing just that selling all our worldly goods except photos if we are going to start a new life we might as well go the full hog we see ourselves as brave and on an adventure all our friends think that we are quite mad!!

Love to hear if anyone has done it or what you all think.

When we left the UK (for Bahrain), we sold / gave away / stored stuff with family, and only took suitcases. Since then (everytime we have moved), we have always shipped our stuff. We found it is easier to settle in to a new place when you have familiar stuff around you. Also, it was a complete pain re-buying everything. Although, having said that, it's great to de-clutter, and the stuff that we gave to family to store, is still with family.

Good luck with your adventure. :)

Hi
When we get our visas we are not taking anything with us either, just the clothes in our suitcases, and me, :) the OH and four kids.

We want to start afresh, we will be keeping things like photos and sentimental things but they will stay with the MIL until we get sorted.
Lots of people have told us that we are mad not to take stuff with us, but we are kind of excited about it. We have never been to Oz, never been further south than the Canary Islands and further north than Birmingham.

I think we are mad.

When I did it it was great fun.Left the wife the house (god knows how she was going to pay the mortgage),flew back to N/cle from germany for two nights to have a beer with the boys and then set off from heathrow not having a clue about oz.Stopped off in Thailand as i had been working there for a while a few years earlier and landed in Perth in the middle of the night.A note was there telling me to take a taxi to the hostel.I think the suitcase was only half full.Stayed in the hostel for 1 week and then rented a flat in maylands ($30 a week?).Bought a chip pan and lived on steak and chips for weeks,a steak that was the size of a dinner plate cost around 95 cents. No work in welding or inspection so got a job as a truck driver.Wish i could do an action replay.

We're just taking personal stuff, but we still managed to ship about 280cu feet of stuff. We haven't taken any furniture - but with clothes, computers, toys etc - it soon adds up. Most important thing for us was that Josh had a bit of familiarity - if we'd have been sprogless we would almost certainly have gone the suitcase route. :)

18 months ago my wife came to Melbourne with 2 bags full of clothes and a few personal belongings. I had to stay in England for a few weeks sorting out our house sale. I followed with another 2 bags full of clothes and a few personal belongings. We have acquired all we have here, mostly from the money of our house sale and the sale of our possessions in England. For us, a new life was a new life and we brought with us the bare necessities and started totally fresh. We aren't well off financially but the new life we have made for ourselves is at least as much as we could have wanted.

Good luck :)

Hiya

We're not shipping any furniture or anything, just stuff like collectibles (mostly toys), DVDs (about 800 of them) and photos etc. Our furniture is just crappy IKEA stuff and not worth paying the shipping for!

I like the idea of starting anew with nothing, but hubby won't give up his DVD collection for anything...

We posted 3 boxes of DVD'sand CD's over forgot to say that. I think it was about GBP 100. But apart from the suitcases and my daughters wooden dolls house (didn't even weigh it at Manchester!) that was it.

We didn't have a lot of money to bring over as we hadn't sold our house but compared to the cost of shipping it worlked out wellfor us. As long as you don't want everything NOW which is a bit of the society we live in.

As we were renting at first we didn't spend a fortune on furniture and things the only big expense was the solid King Size bed and matress. Everything else we got for fantastic prices 6pce dining table $199 still with us now after 3 years!

Friends that shipped lots of things over had to buy things to keep them going. They were here for about 8 weeks without their things after they were messed around (regulars to this site will guess which company they went with). The week before everything arrived the guy said to me I don't know what we have sent as it was so long ago and we've managed to get everything we need already = One big gargage full of boxes not even opened!
