Just come back from Opportunities Australia Expo
Hi guys
I have just returned from the Opportunities Australia Expo in West London and thought I would share the experience -
- It is tons better than Sandown which is much more geared to the actual moving process. This expo had lots more representatives of state governments and also lots more employers, though they seemed to be mainly in the medical and engineering fields.
- It's still quite small, 55 stands.
- The Dept of immigration is there - and this made the whole trip worth while for me. While they are not allowed to give opinion or advice, the chap I saw answered many questions I had about my visa (I am applying on TR subclass 461) and told me I did not need health insurance in Oz on this visa which I did not know previously as Oz has a reciprical medical agreement with UK. He also told me that they would have to apply for my NZ police checks, which I actually had already applied for, and that I needed to complete form 80 to allow them to do this. I would have happily sent off my application without this otherwise.
- Overhearing other people's conversations with the Immigration chap above, the emphasis was definitely - "let's find a visa to fit your scenario" rather than dissuading people. Applicants options were spelled out to them and if they did not qualify for any visa, they were told what they might have to go away and do in order to get one. Remember, this is the dept of immigration telling them this, not an agent.
- I also spoke to an department of immigration specialist working for the State of South Australia. He gave me some good positive info, including the fact that Australia is looking for 20,000 more people to immigrate than last year and that they expect them mainly to come from UK and Ireland.
- I would advise anyone to go to this exhibition, if only to meet the dept of immigration face to face and get their questions answered.
- It costs 8 pounds to get in and is on tomorrow from 10-4. The website is www.expo-australia.com.

thanks for the feedback - what kind of engineering job companies were there? Any Telecom companies, or their suppliers?
For you DIMIA being there was a big help, however we have our visas, is it still worth a look?

Might well be worth a look for you - who can say what might surprise you there? I didn't expect to see DIMIA!

Hi,
Could you tell me if there were any employers there in the hospitality field (husband is a chef). We have an agent who has already lodged our visa so don't need DIMIA, just wanted to get emploment info for husband. Is it still worth us going?

Sounds like you found it really useful. You didn't happen to notice any mention of them doing anything similar up north did you? It's just too far for us to travel right now.
