Yes - and.... if you quote someone then shouldn't you quote the whole sentance?

He or she said "I agree that not all tradesmen are out to rip people off, just
most of them are." You said "all tradesmen are out to rip people off, just most of
them are."

My husband is a Chippy and alot of our penpals going to Perth are manual tradespeople, and there are never going to stop needing people to build, repair and revamp houses. No computer/ technical advance is ever going to be able to fix a sofit, put up a dado rail, mend a broken cistern, so to all you hard working skilled people out there- Australia has heaps to offer- you wont be out of work. And at least with the hard earned dollars that you earn, you can enjoy afternoons on the beach with your family, giving them a healhtier, more pleasuable start to life.

That off my chest.... i bid you farewell.
Cheers

Nicky do you realy want to come here , it seems you are very easily upset the Aussies will rip you to bits .
If there is over supply of tradesmen what do you think happens to wages , a brickie friend I have keeps moaning he only had to work 3 days a week in UK to earn a good living , now works 6 in order to keep head above water.
Keep the beach I would rather spent the day in the English countryside in which we used to live , can not stand the brown waste lands that are called country side here.
If anyone sees a down side its you to where you are living now , we loved UK and think Perth is a prison without walls.
Go out on a winters morming in Perth the smog will choke you , mixture of car and wood burning pollution, great for the lungs.
Keep smiling girl sure you will make a great whinging POM after years of moaning about UK.

Doing your own electrical work in Australia is illegal.

Try to sell a house where you did that and you would have some very serious Legal issues to face.

Really? That's interesting. Is it true in NZ too, does anyone know?

Any other DIY you need to get a specialist in for?

In Aus, where is the line drawn? Obviously changing a fuse, wiring a plug etc don't come under the regs? Or do they?

What about changing a light fitting for a different design?

Thanks- and look!! I have learnt to cut and paste!!! Arent i clever (new that degree would come in useful)- AND THEY SAY THE AUSTRALIANS ARE DUMB!!!!!!!!!

LONDON (Reuters) - Local officials are reported to be furious after road workers apparently painted a white line on the side of a road right over the furry body of a dead badger.
The Sun on Tuesday splashed a photo of the badger across half a page, saying the picture was taken by a passerby who saw it on the side of the highway in Somerset.
The freshly-painted white line at the road's edge went right over the dead animal's back.

Well, you could backtrack a little and consider the different interpretations of the
verb "to rip off". For me, its charging high prices for mediocre work that can be
adequately done by any competent person given a little experience.

    > > I cannot see how it can possibly be misinterpreted?

Any comment can always be misinterpreted.

Giving my opinion of the level of professionalism in the trades hardly makes me a
racist. Anyway, a previous post by you said that maybe I had a bad experience and
that I was ill-informed. That's patronising. I have over ten years experience dealing
with trades people, and for some of that time I had management responsibiilty on
building sites. I think I am qualified to speak on the subject. Until trades people
learn the concepts of customer focus and put their clients requirements first, they
cannot see themselves as professionals.

Nonsense PB, you don't take things that seriously, it just seems that way to some
people. You have a good sense of humour and you enjoy yanking people's chains. I
recognise the signs.

HI,
Thunder Ace, I have to agree with you, A, because you used to be a site manager and B, because you ride a bike, all be it a sad one, (I bought a R6 back to jersey from Aus)
Any way, could any one tell me if you need any form of certification to gain employment in Aus as a site manager or do they go on references and experience?.
Thanks
Gaz

Plumbing, Electrical and Building where structural alterations/additions are highly
regulated, wiring a plug internal to the house is regulated, fitting internal
electrical fittings such as wiring of plugs, light fittings and ceiling mounted fans
are regulated, that work is required to be carried out by not only a qualified
tradesman but he/she must be licensed as well (there is a difference between being
qualified and being licensed ) this is supposed to be a further safeguard to stop
qualified "cowboys" from practising. Structural work such as bricklaying is required
to be qualified and licensed but DIY BBQ is another thing......so in short you need
formal qualifications in your trade (normally 4 to 5 years) and then you need to be
licensed by your State Building Authority, the License may be withdrawn if a
tradesman is found to be incompetent (a little more complicated than that but that's
the gist of it) and then of course one can check up on tradesmen before employing
them, give you some comfort.
