Hi Guys
First post for me!! Planning on emigrating to Perth, Oz next July. Im getting a little concerned about the job market and wondered if anyone could help me out with a bit of advice.
I am a fully qualified Chartered Accountant from Scotland, with one and a half years post qualified experience in the Oil and Gas industry. I would be looking for financial/management accounting, I definitely do not want to go back into practice. I have tried registering with a few of the agencies but they just seem to want to join me up and then leave me alone to look at the website.
I have seen jobs on the website but there aren't loads and as a natural worrier this concerns me.
Is there anyone that can give me a bit more personal experience of the current job market.
Any help would be much appreciated
thanks

Try some of the oil, gas & resource companies websites & apply direct. Woodside, Rio Tinto, etc. As you have experience in the industry you'll have a headstart.

More importantly, do you have a visa? No employer or agency is going to be interested if you can't legally work here.

Thanks for you replies. My visa is in process so not too worried about that. I have been on Seek and registered but I explained my situation and timeline so I dont think I will be a priority for them just now. I really just want some first hand experience from anyone living in Perth who could maybe reassure me a little?

If you really wanna be in Perth, your best bet is to get over here and find it yourself. Its ok doing phone interviews, on line this on line that, but ur best off actually seeing your potential new employer face to face, so you both know what you are letting yourself in for.
Thats my experience of it anyway and its paid of pretty well so far, You should have no problem with Oil and Gas, try the Gorgon Project

Where are these jobs?
EPCM consultant for the Gorgon project will be laying people off EN MASSE next week!
Specialized work (design) will most likely be done elsewhere

There will be very little work done in Perth on Gorgon, it's being designed in UK, built in Asia and assembled in north WA, there's only peripheral work on the camps being done here

Mega-billion project (plus sales of gas to China/Japan etc) not necessarily translates into the plethora of opportunities in Perth.
I do not see the likes of Chevron, Clough, Hatch, KBR recruiting for Gorgon.
Quite to the contrary. Watch Kellogg laying people off next week
So much for the 'mega-billion' 'national' project

Hi guys
I've been reading about Gorgon, it looks good but not clear how/when the finance side will be organised.
I appreciate all your advice re google and seek but my problem is that I am not actually looking for a job right now. I am going travelling for 6 months and dont have a set date to arrive in Australia. I have looked on websites and can see that there are jobs but cant tell how long they have been around or get a feeling for how many applicants would be after each one.
What I really need is someone who works in the finance industry to tell me their personal experience/feeling of the finance/job market in Perth just now. Is it active? Is it on the up? Best time to think about coming over to apply? That kind of thing

I don't where people are getting the suggestion that MWKL is laying off anyone. They have just been awarded the EPCM for a multi-billion dollar project which translates to "we need more people". They're not fully manned up. Oh, and these positions are UK based unfortunately.

you are all talking complete crap...I am working on gorgon and there are many jobs going via the various JV partners, no one is laying anyone off, quite the contrary, there will also be many jobs for companies that have one contracts and that involves design and engineering work and all its associated second tier contracts...there will be follow on sub contracts to these main contracts, then there is the matter of working on the island starting early next year....4000 jobs there from toilet cleaners to project managers, find out who won what TDK, Decmil, Thiess, Compass, Leighton and many more
