Which job offer? Help!
Hello
My husband has been offered 2 jobs. Same job, same location, different companies. He wants to work for one more than the other as there is a big contract up for renewal next year and from what he has found out, this company has more infrastructure etc and people thinking they will get it. However they will not pay for my visa - spouse visa. Basic cost is £1345 plus medical, police checks etc. Other company will pay for it. Hubby wants to go with first company but to be honest, we are so strapped for cash with this move, £2k makes a big difference.
All a bit complicated really. But our mortgage is too low to get another mortgage (ie. BTL). Will already have to get a loan to buy car, rental deposit etc. Do you think should go back to the company and say other company offering to pay the visa, can you reconsider? They are paying flights, car hire, temporary accommodation. Hubby is Australian but company have been over in UK to recruit as can't get people over there, so feel he has good bargaining position. Don't want to piss them off though.
Thanks

Everything is negotiable, everything has a price. Ask the question, the worst that will happen realistically is they say the current offer stands. IMO. I wouldn't want to work for a company that withdrew an offer immediately that you try and negotiate terms.....

If they've offered him a job so presumably want him, what's $2k? That's nothing for them. If he really wants that job over the other one, he has to negotiate. If they're not prepared to throw in a couple of grand, I'd be a bit put off to be honest.

Thanks. That's what I think. Hubby a bit more timid than me but giving him a kick up the butt!
The company also only offering 20 ft container whereas one offering to pay visa also will pay for 40ft one. He still seems convinced other company is better. Argghh! I know you guys can't decide for us, just helps to put it down in writing/type!
Thanks

The other way to look at it is that you spend 8hrs a day at work so you should be satisfied with the whole package (including prospects in the medium term). 2k won't seem so much if your other half hates every waking minute. There is so much more to it than salary. Are the locations different? It may cost an extra 2k a year to get there if it's further away. Will one sway your choice of living area - houses are priced differently in Perth to Mel obviously (I don't know where you are heading - I've only read this thread). etc etc
Try it on, see what the best you can get is, and then make your decision on the whole package.
That's just my view.

Depends if they are in the same place. The difference in living costs could wipe out that 2k difference in a flash.

Which companies? Some of us might know them. Like everywhere some are good to work for and some crap

On the other hand an employer may be put off by someone who would make such a short sighted decision as to chosing the job based on who will pay a visa fee. Motives and judgement could be brought into question, especially if there is already a decent relocation package on the table as is the case here.

I reckon take both jobs and throw sickies on alternating days then pick the one he likes best when he gets to his final warning.

Re: Which job offer? Help!
yes, very funny that! Love it.
It's Boeing and BAE Systems. Both same location. We have asked them to reconsider. Probably end up with no offers now. It's not a fab wage (low $60s) so £2k (sterling) is a lot for us. Might seem petty to them! I know they have already offered a good deal but suppose it's a negotiation. Recruiting from abroad so can't be too swamped with skills locally.
oh shucks - will see what transpires. If anyone can recommend one of those companies over the other, please let me know.
Cheers

Ok, I don't want to start another one of the big "what is the suitable wage" argument. But, do some research on living wage in Oz. Low $60's is not a lot to live on here.

Re: Which job offer? Help!
Just quickly for me per week I spend:
300 groceries
40 wine/beer
20 petrol
70 hubby lunches/bus fare
25 gas/elec
10 water
30 mobiles
15 internet
That comes to $510 a week without paying rent/mortgage, clothes, house insurance, foxtel, dentist, doctors etc
In addition, we have had to spend $10k on braces for 2 kids (direct debit $500/month for 20 months).
All of my weekly outgoings can be trimmed I guess but if £2k makes all the difference to you, how will you manage out here if there's an issue?
Hope this doesn't sound too "preachy", I'm sure you have done your sums already.
