Why no eminant scientists at 16 years old?
But,16 year old learner drivers, checkout chicks etc.
So please enlighten us on why a priveleged young lady is not flying the space shuttle to the Moon or Commanding an Aircraft Carrier?
Whats that?
Easy point boat, punch in GPS directions-Is that too hard??????????
She can spell "eminent" and "privileged" I'll bet.

But that didn't happen did it?
I could explain that to you though I think I'd be wasting both of our times. Mine for writing it & yours because you seem to lack the intelligence to be able to comprehend the reply.
It's 10pm do your parents know your still up?

Yes but a container ship would be all lit up at night and easy to see, anyway did she have radar.

It was dark, and she was asleep.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau's (ATSB) preliminary report into the collision (At 0150, Ella’s Pink Lady’s bow collided with Silver Yang’s port side mid section). ....... She was, in fact, as always suspected, asleep.

I'm not sure but I thought at 0150 was middle of the night, not broad daylight.

have you ever been out at sea at night?
i`ll answer that for you
no
you havent got a clue

i recently ( two weeks before ) christmas helped take a 65 boat down the sydney

as part of this jorney we went through the approaches to newcastle
we has 22 coal barges on the radar ( these things are frigging huge much bigger than a container ship ) hardley saw a light anywhere
so no theres no floating chrstmas trees and every one has to sleep some time and guess what if your solo that means theres no one looking out and you have to rely on the electronic gizzmos that people on here seem to think sail boats on there own, get a grip mate stop talking out of your bottom or better still get your arse of the couch and try sailing you never know you may finally appreaciate how difficult it is,

Oh we shouldn't let a little fact like that get in the way of a good old bitching about a young girl with some get up and go actually doing something positive. Some people having a go at Jessica are probably the same ones who bitch and moan about teenagers being lazy good for nothing layabouts.

Have to say, the ones being very negative about the whole thing, don't seem to want to let the matter rest at all do they?

Yep all lit up. Actually it would have just two white lights one 3m above the other & further towards the stern. It would also show a red Port light or a green Stbd light dependent upon the direction of approach. Now add to that all the stars in the sky & the lights showing from the shore & try picking out a ship showing just three lights . It's bloody nearly impossible & if you'd ever been in the situation you'd appreciate that. I've heard ships coming before I've seen them!
Factor in the approach speed of a possible 22 knots & the fact that she was outside of the shipping lanes where you wouldn't expect a cargo ship to even be as it should have been in said shipping lane. Also add in the swell which would obscure the ship from her vision for 50% of the time.
Still apparently all you need is a GPS, the sails reef themselves, the engine runs automatically to charge the batteries, the rigging mends its self, the food self cooks, sails sew themselves back together etc etc etc.

It's astounding to read the complete ignorance of some people who think that Jessica Watson's accomplishment is trivial and easily achievable if you have the dollars. It's quite clear you know NOTHING about sailing and won't last a day in a dinghy.

As for the question as to whether she is a hero, and that "hero" should be reserved for someone who saves lives ... since when has that been the case? We have sports heroes in just about any activity you care to think about, we have heroes who have climbed the highest mountains, gone to space, and drifted across the globe in a balloon. People who have pushed the boundaries of human endurance just like Jessica Watson.

Armchair critics should retire to their simple world and focus on their goal of improving their Wii and Playstation high scores.

How dare Jessica deviate from normal teenage behaviour and do what she did instead of the usual 'hanging out' at the beach or park like other 'normal teens'.

She probably did it in a luxury cruise ship and just did the beginning and end bit in her little boat to fool people. How dare Australia be proud of her.

Why isn't she hanging out and doing what other kids do, chucking rocks off bridges, or perhaps living her life on the Wii Fit or playstation or something?

What she has done is truly awful!

Come on guys, what did she do that was so terrible?

Great posts from Steve o, Cresta and Kalenge. The simple fact is that most of the people knocking her achievement, alone in open water in total darkness, would piss their pants with fear.
Her achievement is only questionable by the ignorant. Did the media blow it out of proportion? Yes. They do things like that all the time.

It wouldn't surprise me if all she did was sail to Tassie and hang around there smoking fags for the duration ... worked for me during cross country ...
