Perhaps true in certain states. I've never heard of it before.
Please explain further.

Most States run things like OHS themselves - there are remarkable few national regulations for such things.

And I'm aware of no federal OHS law.

Re: IOSH MANAGING SAFETY COURSE
No - Think of it this way.......
If I remember correctly part of the course covers accident investigation and explains what to do if you have to report an incident. ie Reporting of Accidents/Incidents Regs 1995.
Here you would have to follow The Occupational Health Safety (OHS) and Welfare Act and Regs.
Just as an after thought when my qualifications were being assessed they wouldn't even consider my Nebosh Level 4 Diploma!

Re: IOSH MANAGING SAFETY COURSE
If you are a manager of another dept (not a safety dept) and just want an understanding of safety principles so you can manage the safety of your staff, then its fine.
But..... if you are wanting to work as a site based Safety Advisor/Officer my understanding is that this course (on its own) would not be adequate, you need the TAFE qualification as a minimum for that, but it might be suitable if you were working in an office based Safety Administrators role supporting the Advisors.
Best thing to do is have a look at the Safe Work Australia website.

Re: IOSH MANAGING SAFETY COURSE
Hi All
I never thought id be a stone chucker' but sorry Kelli you are way wrong
I came here in Dec with TECH IOSH which was associated with my 3 years OHSE NVQ quallys. Right enough i found it hard to break through and almost thought the same but......
There is no legislation that as a prerequisite you need a cert 4 ect it will really depend on your experience and the company you apply too. I guess if you need proof here i am with the whole western region to look after (6 branches).
It took me 5 months of dead end non safety jobs before i was on the verge of quitting and completing a full time 10 day intensive cert 4 course when 3 job offers came along all at once
True enough all sties have their own way of doing things but essentially application is very similar to the UK.....
I planned like you couldnt imagine before arriving here but given my time again i would get the Australian ticket before arrival. Im lucky now that my employer is sponsoring me to complete both level 4 and the diploma.
Its all about being in the right place at the right time.....any advice that i can help with just PM me as its all good here in WA

I can't be arsed right now and I'm posting from my phone, but I'm pretty sure there's a act that says inspectors should posses basic OHS skills (ie a cert IV). Of course if it doesn't appear anywhere and company's employ staff that aren't knowledgeable on Australian regs ect..... I doubt they'd have a leg to stand on in court when things go wrong.

Re: IOSH MANAGING SAFETY COURSE
There are some roles, eg safety rep in the workplace where you would be expected and have a legal right to training and qualification (in WA anyway).
To say you can't work in any area without formal quals I do not believe. I am responsible for two major hazard facilities and have no formal OHS quals but I do know the law and my responsibilities under it.
