We use TPG and not had any problems so far.
That quota is considered quite small now have a look at http://www.tpg.com.au/ see if you get them in your erea.

Internode.

Not the cheapest, but their helpline is good, and their spam filtering and antivirus works.

iiNet. They are pro downloading.

They're great. Not had a problem with them at all. Internet is always up and great speeds. iiNet are also against the internet filtering and are currently being used as a scape goat for downloading as they are being sued for illegal downloads by the movie and music industry. (the movie and music industry lost!.. But they have appealed)

Ah yeah I read about that case. I will check them out. Thanks for the advice all

Another thumbs' up for iiNet. My hubby is an IT guy and he's very happy with them (I just follow his advice on computer stuff!).

Re: Internet provider recommendations?

IInet are the best ISP in Aus probably. However TPG have really raised the anti, with their 130 gb's no uploads counted plan. Their big plus is if you go over that level, then you only get shaped to 1Mb's which is quite a fast connection. In fact their 69 dollar 160 gb plan shapes you to 2 Mbp's which is pretty damn fast. TPG and IInet and the other big independants are all on 24 Mb's connections which are high speed.

TPG's plan is 49.95 per month, and will set the standard in downloads for other ISP's to match. With TPG's plan you have to pay Telstra line rental, whereas IInet really promote their naked no telstra line plans.

Hopefully IInet will follow suit with the better shaping speed soon.

The company that repeatedly tops Whirlpool's Australian Broadband survey year after year is Internode. Been with them for nearly four years now and have found they bend over backwards to help with problems. Not the cheapest, not the most expensive either - but you know the saying - you get what you pay for.

I won't be getting a telstra line so am def looking for an option that doesn't require one. A catch with a lot of the high limit deals i've seen is that half the usage is only for off peak times. Also i'm reluctant to the myself down to a 2yr contract. 1 would be ok though. I'll call them all next week and see what view can offer me

I have recently signed up with iinet on a 24 month plan to reduce the set up costs. The guy in their call centre advised there would be a $70 fee if I disconnected in the first 6 months but after that no charge so it sounds like they are like virgin & don't charge remaining periods if you leave early

I heard a rumour that TPG customers have had cease and desist letters about downloading torrents. Shame as they have some great packages.

Agree about iinet. Very happy with what I have with them. Been with them for 4 years and have had very few problems - when there have been issues they have been sorted out quickly.

I'm with BigPond paying way over the odds for a paltry allowance that includes uploads.

Do I win a prize? Yes, it's on the list of things to change ...

I am also an Internode user and have been very happy with them: very reliable, decent prices, and they are very responsive to email and phone inquiries. Also, OP, I notice you say that you don't want to pay for a phone line - well, if you get Naked ADSL from Internode and get the VoIP compatible modem, they will give you a free NodePhone account. Just plug a normal house phone into the modem and you can call to/from a "normal" local phone number. Obviously the calls are charged for (cheap) but you pay no line rental. Also, Internode exempts downloads from certain services (ABC iView and TiVo among them - I think?) - maybe other companies do too, I don't know.

No, I am not on a commission! Whirlpool is a valuable resource in any case for choosing between companies.

I also recomend internode I always got top support from them, unfortunately they are not in all areas so I had to go with iinet recently, although iinet are expensive they are pretty good and provide nice easy web tools to monitor dowload limits and things like that

iinet for me too - been with them for nearly 4 years and have had few problems.

I would be tempted to try another ISP as there are some good deals around now but last time I looked, my local exchange did not have any spare slots so I'm sticking with iinet.

Quick question as working out monthly costs etc.

If I take iiNet broadband with phone option do I have to still pay a provider for the phone line or is that all covered within the $29.95?

Have tried looking on their website but can not seem to find answer.

In the UK I use Sky for broadband and TV but left phone with BT.

Cheers,
James

You have to rent the line.

Re: Internet provider recommendations?

are bigpond / telstra really that bad ?

i am looking at getting the foxtel platinum iq tv package bundled with them

cost $188 with line rental and 50gb broadband

install / setup and wireless broadband all included

just rang up internode and cant get the extreme adsl2 package where i am so 15gb costs $69.95 and $29 line rental

and would then have to pay foxtel $120 per month for tv

also iinet doesnt work out cheaper for me for same download size

are bigpond really poor with customer care / service / speed

Big pond are ok with speed and customer service for the most part. It's cost that is the problem. You need to compare Naked plans if you can get them. They are a lot cheaper. The reason you need to compare naked plans is you dont have to pay line rental, which can save anywhere from 25 dollars to 33 dollars per month.

Remember with Bigpond you also have uploads counted.

I chose to pay a hefty cancellation fee, just to get back to IInet..... whos service, customer service and speed is far better than Telstra.

Check to see if the Optus cable goes past your house..... Anyone but Telstra honestly..... there are lots of hidden charges with Telstra, like actually paying your own account, oh and actually getting the bill, on paper that is.

.

i have seen the naked plans and get they are a lot cheaper , but do you still have to have line rental and if so who with and how much does that cost

all it is i am having foxtel fitted and if you bundle it with telstra you get an extra 25gb per month taking it up to 50gb

cost $188 for platinum iq foxtel, line rental , 50gb broadband and phone ,wireless and install
because you are bundling the t.v cost is $20 cheaper per month

No you dont have to pay line rental. You need to check Iprimus/AAPT/TPG/IInet and see if any of those can service you, with a naked plan.

I would also seriously consider Optus if I were you..... although with that you would have to pay line rental, although you will get much better and faster and more download capacity, bundled with your phone costs. Plus they can bundle Mobiles.

cheers for your help ozzie much appreciated

just got off the phone to iinet and adsl+2 is not available down here where i am in mornington..... yet

will go and check out optus now

cheers

optus do not do fixed line broadband down here in mornington

iinet and internode do not do adsl+2 down here so can not do the naked dsl deals and with those i can only have adsl 1 plus line rental

and going by price iinet and internode will be dearer once you add on all the bits and pieces

with telstra adsl + 2 is available down here and then when i bundle the foxtel tv it works out cheaper to go with them

does anyone know if any other providers do cable / adsl + 2 down here in mornington

so seeing as i have no choice

are they really really that bad

Type your phone number in the following link, and it will tell you what companies if any have ADSL2+ at your local exchange.

Hmmm you maybe able to get by with the first 4 digits.... IE 9355 (in my case) then any number after that.... Oh you probably have to add the Victorian prefix in front of that ...03

I just tried Mornington real estates phone number in it.... 0359759075 and it said TPG ADSL 2+ is available on that number. So you may get lucky.

Re: Internet provider recommendations?

just spoke to tpg , no joy with adsl2+ round here

any other suggestions as telstra are the only ones who are saying they do adsl2+ ( can that be right that they have it but nobody else does )

if i go with adsl1 with one of the others then i have to pay line rental and then the price is dearer than having telstra just do the lot with the tv package

having looked into this over the last few days there are some fantastic offers around with naked adsl2+ if you have it available to your area with nice cheap calls to the u.k

Re: Internet provider recommendations?

right last question before i sign up to anybody

(sorry only know the basics with the internet hence all the questions )

with telsra they are the only ones who offer adsl2+

if i go with tpg i will have adsl1 with connection speeds of 1500k / 256k

i use the internet for emails and the odd programme not to download any films/games but am on it a lot of the time as are the kids

in the uk i had cable with virgin broadband which was nice and fast when using it

with tpg they have said that as soon as adsl2+ is available they will put me onto that plan whenever it may be

so my question is will adsl1 be much slower when using than adsl2+ ( again sorry my knowledge on this is very basic ) but i do know i do not like waiting for things to load when i am viewing them

forgot to mention they have all told me i am near to the exchange ( if it matters )

many thanks in advance for any replies

Re: Internet provider recommendations?

If you're just browsing and emailing for the most part, and you have a decent machine, then i would say ADSL1 is fine.

Also unless you are downloading stuff, you won't need more than 10GB or so a month so dont pay extra for a huge allowance. The big allowances are only necessary for people who download a lot or stream a lot of videos.

Re: Internet provider recommendations?

You have to have a telstra line before you can get naked ADSL, I had to pay for a connection with telstra then pay another $100 on top of that when I got my naked ADSL, if you have the telstra line for less then 3 months they count it as temporary and charge you the extra $100, big con in my opinion.

Yeah at the moment I've just forgone all wired broadband and am just using mobile wireless. I have no phone line and Telstra want to charge me $299 to reconnect it, plus all the connection charges for whichever internet company I choose, so I just thought forget it.

I live right in the CBD so I get decent mobile wireless connection and get a good deal with 3. Means I can't download as much as I would like but I can live with that. Its actually good in a way as I used to just download more stuff than I would ever listen to and it would just sit in my harddrive, now I just download stuff I really want so it forces a bit of quality control!
