insurance problem

Hi All,

Just wondered if someone could give me a bit of advice. We moved to the Gold Coast in January and then in early February my mother who is still in the UK was told she has a brain tumor. Luckily it is not canerous and the specialist wants to leave it for 6 months to see if it gets bigger or whether it would be better to leave it.

The problem is that my mum wants to visit us next year but has been told by a lot of insurance companies that they will not cover her for her trip to Australia, one company did quote her just over £2000.

Has anyone else had a situation like this and found an insurance company that is reasonable and will insure her for a reasonable amount.

Any advice appreciated.

I haven't had your situation, but wanted to make two suggestions (but you may have already tried these).

1. Try the Post Office insurance (they have a special policy for people over 75 years of age, hence may be more used to people with health conditions).

2. Talk again to the insurance companies you tried already and ask them if they can insure her if you exclude cover for any treatment necessary re the brain tumour and exclude any death cover.

Once she is in Australia she will be covered for emergency treatment under the UK-Australia reciprocal health care arrangement. Health insurance is therefore really in case she gets sick while on the plane and the plane lands somewhere en-route to off-load her to a local hospital.

Thanks for your reply Gina. We will try both of these suggestions.

Also, would the doctor give her a letter? I know when my Mum had cancer the doctors gave her a letter saying she was fit to travel and she got insurance for a holiday in Greece. Might not work because it's a longer flight etc, but worth a try.

The specialist gave her a letter saying that she was fit to travel to Austrlia but apparently if you mention Brain tumour even though it is not cancerous they panic. She cannot even get insurance to go on holiday in Europe.

The only thing she can do is wait the 6 months until they do more scans and see wht happens then. Fingers crossed.

Thanks for the advice Wendy, just thought that someone might know of a sympathetic insurance company.

Hi Gems,

Thanks for that. I phoned my mum this morning with the telephone numbers and she is going to give them a ring.
