Installing Cat 5 cabling?
I've only just today heard about Cat 5 twisted pair cabling as a way of sending TV signals around the house.
Since our place will be getting its gyproc walling in a couple of weeks I wonder if anyone can give me any advice on what it does, installation and generally how it performs? |

Re: Installing Cat 5 cabling?
I'm sure you could use CAT 5 but instead of the expense and hassle of that why wouldn't you use a simple RF transmitter and reciever and then its completely portable. Just thinking aloud as never really considered it. You'd still need a seperate Foxtel box to view different channels anyhow via that medium.
Not certain it would be worth it domestically maybe ? |

Re: Installing Cat 5 cabling?
I've heard of this, don't know much about it other than seen it put in a house I worked on. (Cat 5 cable is just standard ethernet cable (normally grey coloured) you see on computer networks) like you might have running from a router to a pc/laptop.
Check out (Google.com.au search on Cat 5 TV Video) http://www.smartwiredhouse.com.au/news_page.asp?id=7 http://www.allthings.com.au/Baluns/balun.html Have you considered having a wireless network? Might be cheaper and less hassle. |
Re: Installing Cat 5 cabling?
I Know what cat5 is, even made the odd rj45 by hand! Just surprised its robust enough to cope with that

Re: Installing Cat 5 cabling?
For the most part, home networks are far better on wires, rather than wireless, whether we're talking video/TV signals or data. No wireless network, no matter how robust and uptodate can compete with even a basic 10/100Mbps hub. One of our clients installs smart systems in houses and they've been using Cat5 for video feeds for some time now - no way they'd use something as flakey as co-ax. Wol - if you have the opportunity, get the network in place, not just for the video, but for the home networking. :)

Re: Installing Cat 5 cabling?
Generally cheaper to buy 100m reel than two patch cables ;)
Thought 5e would be better.. Nice geek page here on it http://hiddenwires.co.uk/resourcesar...061003-06.html |

Re: Installing Cat 5 cabling?
I use cat 5 for a lot of cctv instalations and is critical for good signal so i would recomend it highly Have to agree. I install CCTV also. Cat 5 would do the job that you want. |

Wol just needs to get a cable bloke to crash wire the place... put a twin socket in every room plus extras in any places that it might come in handy for later on... Decide where he wants the ends to terminate in the building and site his hub/switch there plus any other bits of hardware he might want... Then you can connect all the sockets to each other via the switch or you can connect any two sockets from any room in the building by connecting the terminating ends with a fly lead... And as Hutch has said wireless stuff is no match for CAT5 cabling... Had it installed in my house in the UK and was very happy indeed... :)

Re: Installing Cat 5 cabling?
If you really want to future proof install Cat6 not Cat5e.
