Installing Cat 5 cabling?

I've only just today heard about Cat 5 twisted pair cabling as a way of sending TV signals around the house.

Since our place will be getting its gyproc walling in a couple of weeks I wonder if anyone can give me any advice on what it does, installation and generally how it performs?

CAT5 is a standard networking cable type. I don't see why not. You could do what you want to do with wireless networking but CAT5 would be more robust. Stick it in I reckon.

I'm sure you could use CAT 5 but instead of the expense and hassle of that why wouldn't you use a simple RF transmitter and reciever and then its completely portable. Just thinking aloud as never really considered it. You'd still need a seperate Foxtel box to view different channels anyhow via that medium.

Not certain it would be worth it domestically maybe ?

I use cat 5 for a lot of cctv instalations and is critical for good signal so i would recomend it highly:thumbup:

I've heard of this, don't know much about it other than seen it put in a house I worked on. (Cat 5 cable is just standard ethernet cable (normally grey coloured) you see on computer networks) like you might have running from a router to a pc/laptop.

Check out (Google.com.au search on Cat 5 TV Video)

Have you considered having a wireless network? Might be cheaper and less hassle.

I Know what cat5 is, even made the odd rj45 by hand! Just surprised its robust enough to cope with that

Re: Installing Cat 5 cabling?

For the most part, home networks are far better on wires, rather than wireless, whether we're talking video/TV signals or data. No wireless network, no matter how robust and uptodate can compete with even a basic 10/100Mbps hub. One of our clients installs smart systems in houses and they've been using Cat5 for video feeds for some time now - no way they'd use something as flakey as co-ax. Wol - if you have the opportunity, get the network in place, not just for the video, but for the home networking. :)

Wol just needs to get a cable bloke to crash wire the place... put a twin socket in every room plus extras in any places that it might come in handy for later on... Decide where he wants the ends to terminate in the building and site his hub/switch there plus any other bits of hardware he might want... Then you can connect all the sockets to each other via the switch or you can connect any two sockets from any room in the building by connecting the terminating ends with a fly lead... And as Hutch has said wireless stuff is no match for CAT5 cabling... Had it installed in my house in the UK and was very happy indeed... :)

Generally cheaper to buy 100m reel than two patch cables ;)

Thought 5e would be better..

Nice geek page here on it

your sparky should be able to sort that out for you. im a spark and its fairly standard to run cat 5 for phone/data. you only have to decide where you want it. wirelass is ok but cabled connections are more reliable, faster etc.did no one discuss with you?

Have to agree. I install CCTV also. Cat 5 would do the job that you want.

Agree 100% with the above but if possible would terminate all the ends to a patch panel and also have your telecom lead from outside come directly to the same place.

If you really want to future proof install Cat6 not Cat5e.

Cheers

Don't forget you need a cabler's license to install it.

I'd choose cable over rf anyday of the week, especially 2.4 gig rf, which always gets affected by Microwave radiation. Microwave ovens generally run on 2.4 gigs as well, so there is inteference anytime someone nearby operates a Microwave. People are moving up to 5.8 gig transmitters/receivers now, and they don't seem to have a history, as yet, of interference, but you never know what the future may bring.

Not sure about Cat 5 cabling though. if thats 5 core coaxial, then I'd say thats the best available at present. As we move onto Hidef reception and beyond as being the norm, it could turn out that in 10-15 years, when 3D tv makes inroads, that Cat 5 wasn't good enough after all.

Re: Installing Cat 5 cabling?

Hi - THIS IS MY BAG - i do this in the uk and its the future (our house is Cat 5 and is now becoming standad with estate agents/surveyors when selling, it potentially adds value to property) - cate5e cabling will support anything you want to put through it. If you were to run a quad (4x) outlet to every room in your house you will be future proofed for pretty much anything that comes along. - My advice - just run the cables and blank them off - you WILL need them soon!!!!!!!!!!!!

you can use them for multi room audio - sharing broadband - phone lines - TV etc, etc.

Hope this makes sense, feel free to pm me if you need anything further. I can tell you where to run wires to & from, etc, if this helps

Confused????

Watty'n'Arls;) ;)

Wow! This is a rat's nest!

I'd never heard of Cat 5 until two days ago - is it the same thing as C-Bus?

As far as I can make out, Cat 5 is twisted pairs of wire - something like 3 or 4 pairs to the cable. Then there's possibly metallic shielding.

Do you send the RF signal along these wires, or component video and audio? And can you send an Austar IR extender signal back to the decoder?

And the silly thing is - the TV is dreadful anyway!

no.c bus is merely a control mechanism for the electrics in your house. personally wouldnt touch it now but will be the way to go in the future. basically everything is wired back to a central point and controlled from there .get a decent sparky to plan the electrics for you.

Thanks. Yes, a friend is putting CBus in his new build and is having problems - but then he has 20 bedrooms, a lake and a nine hole golf course to automate...........
