Info required on Dubbo....
can anyone help?
I would be most grateful to anyone who can provide me with information on Dubbo?
I'm after info such as location, crime rates, things to do, schools, shops there, hospitals (as I'll be qualifed nurse) etc etc... all the gumff I can get on Dubbo would be great.
So far I have only managed to find out that it is a good 5 and a half hours drive to Sydney which suits me fine as I don't particularly want to live near a major city but it's close enough to go to for a weekend.
This might sound a bit of a naff questions but since I know nothing about Oz I'm trying to get as much info together as possible on different areas.
Thanks.

This the Dubbo City Council site.

I drove through it on my way to Cobar - was about tea time when we drove through and it was pretty deserted so dont except Las Vegas will you. Seemed pleasant enough though - but it is what it is - an outback town on the road to..............er...........Cobar........which is another outback town on the road to...........Broken Hill.
Theres a really good corn store and a saddlers - if you're into horses Other than that I dont know much else.
Oh yeh - it was hot!
Oh nearly forgot http://www.gwahs.nsw.gov.au/ this is the health wesbite who look after all the services in that area.

Okeydokey
A good mate is from Dubbo. It's an OK place, but not much to do if you're a teenager and not on land.
Dubbo is like a big market town for farmers....people travel for an hour or more just to shop there.
It is 1hr's flight from Sydney with Rex.
The zoo is amazing!
The weather can be very hot.

Re: Info required on Dubbo....
I remember seeing news reports a while back about how certain parts of Dubbo were practically no go areas in terms of crime, street violence etc. This was I think on particular housing estates but I have no idea if this spills over into other areas.

Re: Info required on Dubbo....
Dubbo is actually a reasonable-sized town (population around 40,000), and because it's the centre of a large regional area it has more facilities that you might imagine. Shopping is pretty good for a non-metro area. It has restaurants, bars, cafes, art gallery etc. Housing is also cheap compared to anywhere more coastal and it's growing fast.
Definitely not a sleepy, one-horse town.

If you go for a weekend, you'll be looking for something interesting to do after about 12:25 pm on the Saturday.

Re: Info required on Dubbo....
I've done a bit of work in Dubbo and found it to be OK - certainly one of the larger 'outback' towns/cities in NSW.
There are a lot of motels and accomodation in Dubbo because it is half way between Brisbane and Melbourne on the inland highway route.
The city centre looks quite nice with some old buildings and a gaol (prison) museum. Also the zoo is very good.
I've walked round the city at night and never even considered any safety issues.
There must be a very large lake /reservoir near by because the person I work at in Dubbo has asked us to go up over the ANZAC weekend and try out his new 24 foot speed boat on the lake
