Default Import a car or buy one?

Which is better?
Nothing special.
I have a 3-year old renault scenic.
Would I be better to bring it or buy a similar one when I get there?
I am going to Brisbane and the car does have a/c.
Thanks in advance

Andrew

From what I've read it costs an arm and a leg to import a car to Oz, as well as huge servicing costs etc as it's a European model.

This is something I am also looking into. From what I can find out it doesn't look to complecated a process and not too expensive. The only slight concern that I have is that apparently the dials must be in km only. As all UK cars are MPH this will need modifying. If I was you I'd have a quick look at the aus equivilant of autotrader and see what you could pick one up over there for. After including shipping costs it may prove cheaper to sell yours here and buy another over there.

Although I have not looked it up, I can not recall anybody on this forum bringing their car over, at least not a "run of the mill" car, as nice as your Renault maybe.

Def buy similar once here !!!!

We imported our car - Nissan Patrol - (cos my ex company paid my relocation expenses and it costs us nothing to bring the car down as a personal effect ) but Chris is already partly wishing we hadnt and the car isnt even cleared customs yet !!!!! But thats partly cos he is drooling at the thought of all the utes and other 4x4s that are available for a bargain here.

Having said that I havent seen that many MPV's on the streets of Perth, (dont know what other cities are like!) so I guess it depends what your needs are for.

The advice about checking out autotrader is excellent. Def need to do that and then make your own call, but for what its worth based on our experience, if you have to pay the transportation costs (plus import duties - large amount of money) yourself its not worth it.

Regards
M

It won't make financial sense to bring it over. On a 3 yr old car there is no depreciation allowance, so you'll be charged duty and GST on the full price you paid for your car. Taxes will be over 25%. Add approx £800 shipping costs and a few other extras and it won't make sense.

It's a real shame - cars seem very dear in Oz, new and second hand

The consensus is to sell it in the UK and buy over here.

That's what I did but I regret not having imported my VTEC Honda Prelude. I would have made a huge profit importing it and flogging it in Perth.

I would have had to have sold it anyway as there is no way I 'd be able to fit my 8 foot 6 surfboard either in or on it.

Costs aside, I was disappointed to learn that I wouldn't be able to bring my convertible to Oz as it's LHD. Still, I'm sure I'll be able to find something suitable.

mines also soft-top which is the reason I'm taking it. Checked on the aussie trader and my car would cost an extra £6k over there yet only costs in total £2k to ship it over. Looking forward to letting the roof down for more than a week a year!!

We think cars are expensive here but it depends what it will all add up to when you pay the other costs. Would recommend anyone to bring a small diesel over-can't get them at all here.
