Identify these critters please!!

Location: Gippsland, Victoria since April '05 and loving it! (ex-Belgium)

Identify these critters please!!
They are always in the house, in every room, on floors, walls etc. Even when I surface spray the house (I can't see them listed on the mortein can I am using either).
My DH tells me they are called 'earwigs' but when I look that up on google I can't find them??
Please help! What are they and how potentially life-threatening are they?!

They look like earwigs to me
