You'd think the market was crying out for IBM programmers but it's not really. There aren't 24 jobs being advertised - there are only 6 - but each agency puts it's own seperate ad in, giving entirely the wrong impression....
Hmm thats the reason when the adv. came for Storage Engineering (SAN) I applied and none replied....Again there came openings in Unix and Windows Systems Applications. So many adv...
It kept me gussesing how come so many Storage Area Networks and Systems experts available in Australia and all filled in...

Hows this for a sad story.

I did an interview for a job in a very specialised area, which I'm good in (but as I said I was aiming very high). The day after the interview, the job started popping up again on agency websites. Within about a week, it was on 6 or 7 agency websites, and so of course it appeared as separate jobs on seek.com.au.

I knew it was the job I had just done the interview for. I also knew I'd failed the interview. They rang me a couple of days later to tell me.

You can put your hankies away now

Cheers,
JTL

A lot of the monkey support roles have gone to India. Good sys admins experienced on large setups will always get work. Anyone can bodge up a 2k file and print server.

Supporting 500 linux systems across as many sites over 5 countries with 3000 users is different. Linux desktop skills and back end administration will also become in demand.

I've been keeping an eye on the market for a while now, as well as speaking to a few bods in the know and it seems there are plenty or Sys Admin type jobs going for the right people. If I'm to crawl into a pigeon hole, that's what I do. Though luckily for me, I do have plenty more strings to my bow.

I guess it depends where you are and what exactly you are looking for but from what I've found and been told, I should be OK.

Even indecent programmers like me do ok!
Surprisingly I went back to AS400 coding, after having moved away the 3 years previous. We arrived Feb 2004, within 2 weeks I had secured my first contract. I've now gone permanent with the company.
The agents say I was lucky to get work so quick, but I'd rather think there's more to it than luck.
Seniors where I am in Sydney should expect a basic of 80+.

I arrived in Brisvegas and after 2 months started work.. Although admit the first month was spent settling in and not really looking.

be aware though that the agents over here are a nightmare... (apart from CornishPete of course) most of the adverts were fake. Once they had your CV you didnt hear anything back from them.. unless you seriously chased them each day.

I'm an IT Manager, but also Prince2 qualified Project Manager and managed to get straight back into it.

Having said that, the local IT Press is moaning an awful lot about overseas coming in and taking local jobs, when so many local IT people are unemployed

They wages over here are NOTHING like the uk.. thats very important to know.. I am still in shock..

Also make sure when you discuss your new salary that you get the figure without Super, as most places give a figure but you have to take 9% off for Super (hope that bit made sense)

So, they may be short on IT people, but it doesn't mean they'll take whatever is available.
I've said similar on here before - if you are good at your job (& I don't mean just ok, I mean seriously good at it), you will probably find it easy to get something & earn good money. If you are merely OK (& lets face it, most of us are ok, but not a star in our field), you may find it alot harder.

They won't necessarily take someone just to fill a role, unless they are desperate.

You ain't wrong, I can second that impression here too ... and it's freaking annoying.

My advice? Take anything you can intially, and build-up a list of IT managers that know what you are really about ... personal contact and "just rocking up on the off-chance" seems to be more important here than in the UK.

I was interviewed for one job that I was totally unsuitable for only to be given the manager's mobile number and to be promised contract work if any came up. And that was the Government (supposedly a by-the-book employer).

Get out there and meet people, tell 'em what you can do and carry some CVs around ... yeh, I know, obvious stuff. But I'll do ANYTHING to avoid bastard job agencies.

Good luck anyone out there, the jobs are around.

Cheers,
Matt

And if you're contracting and earning over $50K then you get stung for 10% GST too.

As long as it goes to good causes like education and health care

(edit) AND Medicare levy (1.5% if you have private health insurance, 2.5% if you don't) ... and I don't even have a poxy Medicare card!

(more edits cos I'm bored) AND books are too expensive, AND technology is too expensive, AND there are too many people that just look so damned healthy, AND if I want a pint I don't want to specify "a pint" each bloody time AND the Pacific Freeway wasn't (or wasn't this week) AND there's not enough Premiership news (thanks SBS, you're a lifesaver) AND there are too many dogs barking at all hours AND the 2$ coins are just a STUPID size ... it's a hell-hole, I've just realised ... taxi!

You'll get over it.

I believe when the Winter rains commence in Brisbane it washes the oxidised zinc galvanising off the roofs, this goes into the drinking water and calms down the populace.

So you only have a month or so of twitching to go :-)

Default Re: I.T. Market

I was recently looking for a .NET developer with excellent skills.

I didn't advertise, made a few calls to some people I know at some of the agencies and within the space of a few hours I got 10 CV's through.

I ended up taking someone on for $25ph.

The feedback I was getting (and this is in Perth) was that there are more people out there looking for work than is available; hence people are prepared to work for a lot less.

The rate may have been a bit lower than the true current market, as I don't require people to work from an office. They work from home and manage their own time so I can get an even lower rate because they don't have to work 9 to 5.
