If anyone needs a website making for them - it's what I do for a living... Since moving over here I have set up my own business, so any ex-pat help in keeping me with food and water very appreciated

Look at my work: www.purpleolive.com

If you need any advice, I'd be happy to help!

Thanks
Michael

Hi all,

Glad this came to the top of the list. Makes for interesting reading - there are many different opinions on web development, some of which are discussed here.

Personally I believe in constantly changing websites and sites which are easily updatable by the site owners.

Sorry timberfloor, but flash sites like yours, whilst once 'trendy', do seem to be the bain of most people's lives!! Just my opinion, but this kind of sites tells you more about the web designer, than your company /business.

I personally have experience in integrating websites with corporate databases or adding a back-end database to a website to store page information. Adding a content management system ensures that my customers' websites are able to stay up to date and can be managed easily.

I have a company here in the UK specialising in this kind of work and thus far it is very successful. When in OZ who knows, I hope to be able to setup something similar.

Good luck with your new venture - i assume you are looking to give PomsinPerth a run for their money

Dave

Crikey. It's amazing how people won't go... "Hey great work, you've worked for some great people and done some great award winning work, well done"... I wonder how many BAFTA's you've won?

The first thing everyone in the web industry seems to do is to try and pick holes in other people's work... "Look - you've got a bit of code wrong and as such you're not W3C compliant". Is it some sort of ego trip? If you were being helpful you would have dropped me an email - or do you think I will now feel suitable publicly embarassed? Well i don't as there is no reason why my site needs to be so accessable, but thanks for the heads up!

Why are people so quick to be negative?

Or is it just because it's monday again? sigh.

Hi Joanne,

I had stumbled across your site prior to this post actually. I think that your site looks fine. If I may make a couple of small comments, I personally would lose the clip art graphics. Also an area of the site which will keep changing (eg discussion forum) would ensure people return to the site regularly. I think the kids angle / page is a good one though.

Do you have accomodation ready for people to rent (e.g. as PomsInPerth do) or will you effectively act as middle men for people who are over here?

Hope it all goes well for you anyway.

Cheers
Dave

Hi Dave
We dont own any properties here like Poms in Perth do. What i do is find the best accommodation that suits the customers needs and requirements etc, suppose like a middle man as you say. When people book accommodation normally its booking it blind isnt it, but what i can do is actually go in and check the place out etc. What i also have is a small collection of apartments and houses from people that i have already approached and looked over the place ready to use when and if needed. So i know that what the customer is walking into is exactly what they want.
What i feel is i am also contributing to the tourism industry here in Perth which needs a big boost, so helping other establishments.
Thanks for the advice on the website. Have got a digital camera so i am looking to update the site. Not sure about the disscussion forum part we are all attached to this site

Hi Joanne,

Sounds good and makes sense. I must admit I was surprised at what appeared to be a lack of tourism in Perth.

It seems that what you are aiming for and what PomsInPerth do are different enough that there should be enough business for the two of you. I know PomsInPerth as I stayed with them back in April.

Yeah ok you may have a point about the discussion forum - it was really just a comment about having something that is updated regularly so that people will keep coming back.

ABCD,

I've got a couple of UK websites hosted for free by getdotted. Only problem is I need to use a specific telephone connection number in order to connect to their servers, it denies me access if I try to use my BT Broadband connection. Obviously I won't be able to use this number once we arrive in Oz.

Which ISP do you use in Oz and the UK and how easy was it to transfer your domain name ?

I use www.cheapnet.co.uk for my UK one, and have been pretty happy with their service. I didn't actually transfer it, I still have it hosted in the UK, and I feel it is better than my Australian Hosting service.

Free hosting isn't very common out here, but if anyone else knows of any please let us all know

The best price in OZ that I have found so far is $115 per year, at illisys.com.au
