I need a job

I am leaving for Australia on 18th October. Staying with family for a week or so then moving on. I am still waiting for my visa but CO says it should only take a week or so and certainly well before flights. I anticipate it will be a temporary spouse visa.
The problem is, I am trying to apply online for semi decent jobs to start when I arrive. The most obvious workplaces in Townsville are Centrelink and Telstra. Neither of which will touch me unless I am a citizen or PR. Does anyone have any info on other places to try?
I am looking for office/retail management/call centre work that pays at least $30000.
I will have to wait to apply for some jobs because my visa is not yet through.
Thanks in advance.

You might be better off just waiting until you get there or at least until a bit nearer the time. Most employers are not too interested until you (general you) are on the ground. I found that was the case even with PR. You are just going to stress yourself out applying now and getting nowhere.

very true, would just be nice to be all sorted. Will just make the husband apply for jobs now as he is a citizen. Then I can be a lady of leisure.

I recommend you send off your CV, then RING the agency as a follow up. This means getting up very early in the UK - just do it.
This is what I did and I had 3 interviews lined up on landing in Australia.

One trick with a temp spouse visa is to ensure that whenever they ask what visa you are on make sure you tell them it is temporary for 2 years leading up to a PR grant. Employers won't realise that a Temp Spouse Visa is usually as good as PR, you'll have to tell them

(and yes, before I get savaged by JAJ and others, we all know that not every temp spouse visa leads to PR but for the purposes of getting a job you need to put it over the best way possible)

Even as a citizen he might have problems as he's not actually here.

The above worked for me when a couple of organisations (none of which were my current employer) asked if I was a PR.

Either that or the OP could describe themself as a provisionally permanent resident. I'm 99.999% sure that the term has no meaning in immigration law, but all's fair in love, war and landing a job before you get here!

Thanks everyone. I am kind of floundering without much of a clue. I know I need a job and only one of us can work full time at first because of child care costs. I will get on to a couple of agencies and register with them. Any ones to avoid out there?
