I Have Never Been! - But Going Out For Good Soon!
Hopefully, we will be in Perth before Xmas
I went to the 'Emigration Show' at Sandown and sat in on one of the talks. The hosts were saying that you would be very foolish just to go out there without first doing a reccie and deciding whether its right for you!
Unfortunately, as probably like a lot of people, we own a business which does not allow us to take time off and plus the fact when there is 5 of you it tends to be quite expensive to purchase tickets plus accommodation & living expenses.
My husband was out there at the beginning of the 90's for about 2 years and said that he would one day end his days there, I am very excited about the move, I have no worries at all.
Is there anyone else in the same boat?? Going out without being before??
Surely I am not the only one

Afraid there is no magic formula or crystal ball.
Good luck with it.

Re: I Have Never Been! - But Going Out For Good Soon!
Hello,
We decided to come without a reccie probably for similar reasons as you. We are a family of 5 and a lot of people don't realise how expensive this makes a reccie trip. Personally we felt that a short trip to any country would not provide us with a genuine feel for that country as we would be in holiday mode and everything would be seen through rose coloured specs. We felt that we could commit to at least 2 years, which would be sufficient for us to get a real feel for the place and if we did decide to move back the moving costs would not really be that much all things considered (i.e. the adventure of 2 years in a foreign country). We did have the additional confidence that both of us have lived for significant amounts of time in other foriegn countries and that we have always been prepared to fit into the local culture (we thought Australia would be a doddle compared to my wife's 18 months in China).
Currently we have been here for just over a year and we love the place, we definitely made the right decision, both in terms of not having a validation trip and the decision to settle here.
You will need to take some time off when you get here to do the things that you would have done on a reccie trip. Although we did a lot of research over the internet we rejected our primary chosen location and went with our second choice. There are somethings that you just can't get from the internet.
The only downside of being here is the distance from my family and the cost of taking 3 (soon to be 4) kids back to the UK to see their grandparents and other family. However, the upside far outweighs the downside.
To me it sounds like your decision is perfectly sane based on your circumstances. Also remember that Australia is a large and varied place and if you don't feel happy with your first choice of location you can always try somewhere different without the hassle of changing countries.
Regards
Alistair

Thanks Alistair,
We find ourselves, whenever we have a spare moment, on the internet living the Aussie life - when they invent a computer that gives the affect of sunshine and the sounds of the waves, then there will be alot of happy people, i'm sure!!
Really excited about the whole thing, just wish they would pull their fingers out and request our meds/police checks!!

Hi,
we're a family of 6 and we've basically offered any family who want it a ticket out here (we don't have that much family) as it is far cheaper than all trawling back to the UK!!
Not feasible if you have a huge family I don't suppose!! :scared:

We are also a family of 5 and are hoping to be in Perth for this Sep. We are at this stage waiting for our Visa, hopefully this will come through in the next two weeks. We have never been to Australia before and have decided to just go for it. Like a lot of you have said , a reccie trip would have cost a lot , we reckon the equivalent to four months actual living in Perth. So with that in mind We are taking the plunge. We put our House on the market last Friday to test the market, so we will just wait and see what happens. I have never experienced such a mixed bag of emotions as I did when the estate agent was measuring up the house. I know this is not uncommon but it scares you all the same. Wishing everybody in the same boat a Very Happy New Life

We came out last August having never been before and have had no probs and do like it here. We felt that coming out and getting straight into real life would be the best way for us.
I think people can get the wrong impression if only here on a holiday, and when you get out here for good it is different, and that can put you off when you first arrive.
