Well we have been 11 months nearly now in Perth , and i have actually managed to get myself job , im really chuffed to bits. Its only casual and 14 hours a week but its a start , need to get the good old WA experience from somewhere. Have always been in retail and could not believe how hard it is to get a job. Anyway the job is at AQWA in hillarys , cool , i have a free pass for the kids for as long as i work there , and they gave me my free pass to have a dive with the sharks etc in the tanks , will think about that one !!! Perhaps i will enjoy the summer first before i take that dive , you all know our bloody luck , ill get eaten as soon as i step in the tank !!! So im happy , all pop in and see me wont you , but please dont give me grief , will try and get you all a discount .

Well done Joanne. You have shown a lot of determination here. I have known people give it up as a lost cause and go back to a proper career in the UK after a shorter time than 11 months so you have stuck with the terrible jobs market here better than anyone could reasonably ask.

I do not want to piss on your parade but I have to say that your story makes the jobs market seem even worse than I thought when after 11 months all Perth gives is 14 hours a week on a casual basis, especially since you are in retail which is in some demand. As you say it is a start but it speaks volumes about the very poor job prospects and should make others realise that they had better plan for long term unemployment when coming here and spend as little as they can on agents and such like. What it should also show people is that there may be very tough times ahead if their husband is not in a trade or some other job where there is a shortage. Most people could not afford to have 2 people unemployed for a year or more.

There will be many people who have not experienced long term unemployment because of the opportunities and excellent job market in the UK in recent years which they have taken for granted. It can be a very hard thing to take, even if there are savings made in the UK housing market to keep you afloat.
