just want to bring this one up again for those of you with a past history of depression anxiety etc!!

we had our meds yesterday and went prepared with letters about previous history from the GP. hubby was treat for depression and anxiety from 1997 to 2002 and this was stated in the letter and that medication the ceased in 02.

panel doc said migh be a 40% chance maybe less that dimia might ask for a more recent review to check if he's ok, which he is! but does anyone know, if they do ask , is it a psych of thieir choice and do they want to see previous gp notes??

any help on the subject greatfully accepted

thanks

thanks

You need forms 26 & 160, download them from the DIMIA website.

Regarding surgery, put it all down, I didn't take any further letters from my doctor.

POST NATAL DEPRESSION

My wife was diagnosed in 2004 with severe PND and has been having regularly treatment at the Priory.

On the application we were open and forthcoming about it. At the medical the topic was also brought up and the reply was positive.

Firstly you must be honest and put it down - to leave it out and they find out later gives them the ability to kick you out at any time.
Secondly they want to see you are doing something about it - ie as we had already been progressing with her treatment (and had private medical to cover it) that was fine.
Thirdly - PND is not a contagious disease that people should be afraid of and if they started stopping women (and men) with PND no body would be getting in, (reference back to point 1).

PS Post Natal Depression is not the baby blues and takes more than a pill to clear up. For the men out their - this is a real test for you, there is no award and all you will get is years of grief - but if you love your wife you have to support them no matter what they do, say or react to. Just be there.

Hope your wife continues to recover from her illness. I work with women with postnatal illness so can understand how debilitating it can be. However as you say, so easily treatable with the right sort of support.
Best wishes

I can't believe how many people on here have experience of anxiety! I have been keeping mine quiet because of the stigma attached to it too. I am on the road to recovery - still hate the fact that I have it but I know that if I continue to practice 'acceptance' on a daily basis that in time it will pass. Can I ask those of you who have suffered with it - was it brought on by the immigration process do you think? I think that I had probably suffered with it for years without realising - this immigration lark just brought it all to a head. Onwards & Upwards though!!

Take care all

Hi only just seen this thread, just wanted to add that I suffered depression for many years and at the time of our application I was very worried about declaring it, however I came clean about it at the meds and got a letter from my gp to take with me and we have the visas.

Will my doctor have to release my medical history to the relevant agency etc.
Any opinions?
Firstly as a holder of a Diploma in Mental Health Work I doubt very much if having had an episode of depression would be a problem. Depression is a very common health issue adn technically it is not a true mental illness (I won't go into this in depth here but basically the labelling of it as such has been more a misreprensentation of the facts to benefit those with political interests.)

Secondly there are various types/levels of depression. Most are treatable with a combination of therapy and drugs. Only the very serious tend to require psych admission/ect treatment and even then a favourable outcome I think would not prjudice anyone. Governments are more concerned with ongoing chronic illnesses and debilitation that may drain the public health system. Personally I wouldn't even mention your experience with depression unless specifically asked.

Good luck with it all

This is a serious point.

Failure to disclose could be seen as visa fraud and your visa can be cancelled if it later comes to light.

Depression tends to be a recurring illness so the chances of another episode are quite high.

I won't get into a debate with Kiwichild as I actually specialise in the treatment of depression in my NHS work and am involved in an ongoing research project.
