If you are going through an agent allow around 3k(gbp) if doing it yourself just 1k.
Shipping varies, we sold everything and brought 9boxes for 500quid, a container ie all furniture for 3bd house is around 4k
Flights for 5 of you would be around 5k (one way)
When you arrive, in the current climate, you need to have some money in the bank to tide you over. OH is a plumber and has had just 5wk work in 6months so good to have a few grand, i dunno about8?
Cars are generally about 3times what they are in the UK, but if you want something cheap you could get something reasonable for $2000 (1k)
Rental, if you want 3beds ( we are on sunshine coast) are around $400wk, if you are not too fussy you could probably find something a bit cheaper. Check out realestate.com.au for prices. As we didn't have refs we paid 3months up PLUS you need to pay 1month bond up front so you would prob need about 3,500gbp If you are lucky as we were you may be able to get fully furn, if not and you haven't shipped your furniture then there is the cost of all the new furniture - around 3k
There are a few set up costs like drivers licenses, setting up mobile phones and internet access etc. all about the same as the UK.
The cost of living where we are is quite similar, perhaps a little cheaper if you go to the greengrocers and you can get large quantities of meat fairly cheap. Wine is cheaper, i think beer a little more although there are some good deals.
If you have a mortgage now you will find it less stressful renting. You obviously don't need your insurances and water is all paid for so there is just the rent, electric, phone and internet.
Petrol is half of the UK price but you do have to drive further here, still i think it works out a bit better here.
Sparkys get around $25 from what i have heard ($52k), but if you are a supervisor you may get more.
You can get a family centrelink payment of around $300 every 2wk, perhaps more for 3kids.
So, yeah, around 20 odd grand, BUT some of that is back up, if you are really careful you may get away with less.
Hope that this helps!

After looking into and speaking to various agents, we are now worrying about how much money moving and re settling would be.
Do you have to have loads of money behind you to go?
Are the agents any good or is it easy to do yourself?
Are the wages for electricians really that bad?
How much is living costs over there?
Looking at New south wales, gold coast etc.

Thanks for replying to this thread. I am quite worried when you say that living is about the same as over in the uk. My husband earns £40,000 a year and for us to drop to at least half that but still have the same living expenses as over here is a major concern.
Any othere tips????

Good industrial electricians are still in demand and earn around 90-100k easily. A spark I work with is cable pulling at the mo on the gateway upgrade and he gets $39 phr in normal time.
So thats $81120 before overtime and penalties. Don't know what the exchange rate is but it certainly ain't 20 thousand pound...
