How much Money is OK to settle
#1
Hi All,
We are a family of 3 (Me, my lovely Wife and a gorgeous 2 year old daughter)
Considering the fact that I am in IT, I would like to start my Job search in Melbourne (coz its cheaper than sydney), how much should we carry with me. I am ok to carry 50K AUD (Frankly that's what I have got). Will that suffice? Can I get any apartment (1/2 bedroom to start with) in descent neighbourhood (any place in distant suburbs as I am ready to commute) for less than 250 AUD per week.

Be warned you can put in as much as want from this end but to take it out once in Aus, you will have to first go inside in person and produce ID, then you can just use the account as normal.

I would agree with Sheff and suggest you open an account in the UK and transfer the cash. Just take a small amount with you to see you through the first few days. All you will be required to do is pop into the bank of your choice and collect the cards, cheque book etc once you arrive.
With regards to rentals your best bet would be to have a look these websites:
www.realestate.com.au
www.domain.com.au
You might be able to find something for that amount in the west of Melbourne. Around Tarneit, weribee, point cook etc.

Just wanted to let you know that I am from India. so I have to find out the ways to open a bank account. I know they have ANZ in India so probably will ask them.
BTW, is geelong a safe and good area to stay.
