Also, in the Melbourne example, there's mention of "council rates". I assume this is the equivalent of our council tax? And you have to pay this even if you are not a home owner, but renting?
Thanks.

Some Landlords also pay the Water Rates.
The Tenant JUST pays rent.

$97.40 - Bank Fees (QLD credit card duty)
$4,760.88 - Car (2 cars, running costs only)
$2,364.34 - Education (private 1 child- for 6 months only)
$937.80 - Electricity
$2,521.82 - Entertainment
$6,616.51 - Food General
$17,899.85 - Household Furniture & things
$1,556.58 - Medical, medicines etc. (Chemist was $781, Dentist $775)
$9,316.06 - Misc (Clothing, the wifes hair cuts, etc)

No Perrsonal Mortgage, but we seem to spend a bit on "Household odds and ends" instead.

Re: how much income for a normal life?
We (2 adults, 1 child and a budgie) have been here for 9 months now, 4 bed open plan rental in an expensive suburb, with ducted heating, through a Melbourne winter.
Just averaged out our outgoings so I hope this is useful to someone!
Monthly.....
Phone $41 (card for overseas calls)
Mobile $60 fixed plan (also have a pay as you go which hardly gets used.)
Electric $70
Gas $129
Water $33
Ambulance cover $9
Rent $1474
Car insurance $54
RACV membership $8.50
House contents insurance $20
Bank charges $15
Food $720 (all fresh stuff)
School charges $23 (state primary)
Petrol $300 (into city for work and weekend trips)
Broadband $30
We have $4000 coming in per month after tax so this leaves us with $1070ish for dentist, medical, clothes, outings, spending, cigarettes, alcohol etc.
Had a tax rebate and the family tax benefit which paid for a holiday!
We could definatly get a cheaper rental (much smaller) for $800 round here but needed the space for visitors this year.

How typical are your costs for Brisbane? Your Household furniture costs appear high (no judgement really intended).

And I agree with you on my "Household" expenditure !! I'm going to analyse it later, but I think about $3,000 was for the garden & about $6,000 for Electrical goods etc :scared:

Slightly along the same thread guys, but I generally live on the assumption in the UK that I'll get roughly 2/3 of my salary after tax. I know the tax regimes are completely different but is this a useful generalisation or not?

Re: how much income for a normal life?
We dont have jobs to go to but have done our sums on earning $30000 each per year(hopefully this will rise but thought it best to base it on an average wage)
We are going to Tasmania and we will rent to start with and then buy- we have a deposit but will still have a mortgage which i recon will cost $1400 per month.
We will be much poorer in Oz than here as at the moment my husband works in internet sales and earns good money but I doubt he will get a job like that in Tassie.
I have done some sums and i think we will manage but wondered about medical costs- there are just the two of us so what sort of medical plan would we need and how much does it cost ??
Thanks for the info
Nat

How does $65,000 for Brisbane sound for 2 adults and 2 kids? I know the correct appraoch is not to convert it back to pounds, but when you do it gets a bit scary!
Plus what kind of mortgage can you get on this?
Many, many thanks.

$65,000 is more than the average wage, and I know people on less than average paying $250pw rent, that manage to get by, and have holidays.
But it does depend on what you want, and how extravagant you are, etc etc.
