I have read a really interesting book about the power of British Supermarkets and it has some really interesting facts, for instance at one point the cost of a can of generic baked beans went down to 3p a can which was actually less than the can cost to produce, but every supermarket wanted to be able to claim that they offered the cheapest product. Tesco's sell Economy white bread for 16p a loaf which they make a loss on but hope that by offering some products at a ridiculously cheap prices they can entice you to buy other things. With regards to BOGOF or reduced price offers, they are subsidised by the producer and not the supermarket, in fact the producer is effectively told by the supermarket that they have to do this and if they do not their contract could be ended. A lot of brands have to pay a ""rent" to the supermarkets to be able to put their products on the shelves. And finally if a customer were to take a product back to a shop to complain the producer would be given a large fine by the supermarkets (which would go to the supermarket and not the customer of course). What I am trying to say is that although British supermarkets are cheap, I am not sure whether they are ethical, the low prices mean that the producers pockets are squeezed to bankruptcy and the fat cats at the top of the supermarket chain are laughing all the way to the bank. I hope that the higer prices in Oz mean that it is different to here and maybe there are different legislations to protect the small producers and that it is and that is why prices are higher. However, you may be pleasantly surprised when you arrive as you will find that if you buy seasonally, the shopping bill should be similar (or in my case cheaper) than the one in the UK. The first couple of shops are usually more expensive because you'll probably have to stock up on basics and because you'll be learning a new shopping style. In the UK I never used to check prices but here I do as they can vary greatly from month to month and from variety to variety (e.g. apples). (Note: off-season grapes are about $12/kilo whereas they are less than $3/kilo in-season.) As in the UK local shop prices are cheaper than the supermarkets so if you have the time or inclination to shop locally then there are savings to be made. I find local shopping easier here as there seems to be more competition (e.g. multiple greengrocers on the same street) and free parking. A :) |
