Hi All,

I am trying to find out if anyone who originally imported their car from the UK when they emigrated has since sold it on in Australia.

As has been widely discussed within the forum, personally imported cars brought from the UK seem to sell for less than the same make and model of car originally bought in Australia.

I would love to know what the general difference in value was though?

Anyone done this?

Sorry can't help with the original question, just wanted to know if you went ahead with the house build and if so how's it going?

May help ,may not.The Ford Capri was not released here,the very few I have ever seen were imported from NZ or S Africa I think.

In the late 80,s there was a 79 Capri advertised in the Sunday Times in Perth.Black john player special,3 litre V6 I think.They wanted $14,000 for a rare car,10 years old,well overpriced I thought.At the time 14k would have bought a 2 or 3 year old Fairmont Ghia or Commodore Calais.

When we returned from SA to WA the car went over the pits for WA rego.There was a Jaguar XJ six waiting to be inspected,it looked brand new and still had the UK plate on it.Great looking car,it had been valeted and looked perfect.Talking to the inspector he thought a dealer was bringing it in hoping to make a quid on it,it was destined for the scrap heap he said and showed me the suspension towers.They were lace work full of rust and would have probably collapsed at the first bump in the road.The floor was almost none existant when he took me down the pit to look,you could push your fingers through it it was that rusty.They had hidden the rust with black tar underseal.

Geordiedownunder - thanks for that. we are really looking for more recent imports though. For example in the last couple of years, where someone has taken their UK car with them, used it for a while and then sold it on.

I am just trying to get some info on the real value of imports against Australian sold cars, with some exmples.

I would say once you affix the Australian compliance plate

next to the original one on the car it will reduce the value
of the price of the car ie red book price by about 20%

Not quite correct. Ford assembled the original Capri's in its Sydney plant http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Capri#Australia. Ford then revived the brand in the late eighties with another locally built product. See www.capriparts.com, particularly the piece that says "built in Australia and sold throughout North America, New Zealand and South East Asia".

They were a convertible based on the Mazda 323/Ford Laser platform and had a reputation as bit of a lemon due to water leaks.

There you go ,I didn't know that,so few of them sold.
I had an old capri in England,the 1300 one,it was crap but they did look nice cars.Once I got to OZ I fell in love with the XA/XB/XC Falcon range,based on the Mustang,around half as big again as a Capri and left the Capri for dead.

The Capri I really liked was the 61-62 model,beautiful cars,only ever seen one here at a Ford old timers show.The ford Classic had the rear window like the 60,s Anglia and the Capri had the coupe rear screen,wish I had one.

When they launched that OZ Capri there was a lot of noise here,a huge market was expected in the US,they really thought it would do well.What a heap of crap it was.See the odd one in the car yards in Perth,held their price well,still go for around 6K for an 89-90 model,I wouldn't have one.

You find alot of Carpi's, like the Escorts, Anglias and Cortinas, have been updated and converted for use as racing cars, particularly in the Historic and Sports Sedan categories. There are, however, several Capri clubs getting around the country for road use cars and owners. I particularly liked the model driven by Lewis Collins in "The Professionals" and the TC Cortina (my first car).

Hey, my thread has been hijacked.

Mind you I used to have a 1978 Black Capri 3.0S when I was in my early 20s (about 16 years ago), it was was one of my favourite ever cars, like a long go-kart with that lovely rasping Essex V6!

Seriously though, has anyone taken their UK car in the last couple of years and sold it on after a while - is 20% less value than the exact same model but bought in Australia a good guide?
