I sincerely wish you guys luck - we're leaving for Mackay or Gladstone in 2 weeks - which, I am told, are utter dumps but have plenty of work going. Keep your peckers up!

Why don't you try Perth now that it is classed as regional?

That's more or less exactly what I said today :D

I was also thinking of applying saying "please reject my application as I don't want a job".

We looked into that but couldn't find a marina berth any closer than Geraldton.

Lots of jobs there with all the new mining activity.

It looked a bit depressing when we stayed there a couple of years ago for 2 nights. It's also out of my sponsorship state but if there's a chance of a decent MBA style management job (although I don't have mining industry experience)?

Sure, boat berths are in short supply in Perth. Why not park the boat in Geraldton and get a flat in Perth?

Geraldton is a bit of a shithole but is expanding rapidly and there is loads of work there.

Thanks for the heads up AZ. We're going to try Mackay I expect. If it comes to shitholes that one's better located for sailing and nearer to our current location. (In fact I think I might begin a Queensland 'shit hole index' where I can rate the towns on the various variables that make up a shit hole ie, % of blokes with mullet, 3rd degree coverage skin tats and so on....)

I love Australia, but even I agree that many rural towns are total shitholes, populated mainly by rednecks.

Which ones have you done? Cairns doesn't count as its cosmo.

Cairns isn't a candidate for the 'Shit Hole Index'.

Yeah, I agree about Cairns.

I've only really done Townsville and Weipa to any extent.

Weipa is a weird place - probably not enough people there to make it a 'shithole' - some bloody big crocs in the water there. Might as well just rename it 'Rio Tinto 37' or something.

So far my top holes are Rockhampton, Macksville, Tennant Creek, Mount Isa and Townsville but the competition is bloody tough. It's amazing how such ugly depressing towns exist against such a beautiful natural landscape.
