Re: How many out of work?
My category isn't covered in the poll.
More than 52 weeks. :( |
Re: How many out of work?
Since I arrived back in Sydney for a second stint at Xmas 08, I've done about three months' casual work in three different periods, months apart.
I have a small income so don't qualify for Centrelink and I have to dip into my savings. I did get a bonus of a 1,200 quid tax refund the other week. I apply for jobs on www.seek.com.au. The most I have applied for is over a hundred, the least, getting a job with the first application. I had a woman from an agency the other week, berating me for the gaps in my CV, telling me to send her a new one. If only I could think on my feet I would have told her something 'witty'. Instead I just stuttered. I should have lied on the bloody thing, said I was ill or travelling around Australia or asked my last employer in the UK to say I left a year later than I did. (three years in fact.) |
Re: How many out of work?
Still in the ranks of the unemployed unfortunately! I did make progress last week as I was interviewed, made the top 5 out of 70ish applicants, but didn't get the job. It was actually the most bizarre "interview" I've ever had, they didn't actually ask me any questions and just talked at me for 25 minutes or so and it was hard to get a word in edge-wise. Never mind, I still view this is progress! I had a rejection letter this morning for a job I applied for about 4 months ago, I kind of guessed I hadn't got it quite a long time ago
Actually, I took that rejection quite well because it was from the department of transport and my first thought when I got the letter was "oh crap, it must be a speeding ticket!" - not that I speed, but OH does, so bearing in mind our financial woes, getting a rejection was quite a relief  ! |

And now I'm TERRIFIED of that particular intersection. Last time, the lights changed just as I was accelerating and I was so screwed up I went straight on instead of right. Sooner or later I'm going to do an emergency stop at a red light and get rammed. |
Re: How many out of work?
I can sympathise with speeding tickets because some I have had over the years have been for absolutely ridiculous speeds, like a highly dangerous 108 in a 100 zone on a deserted Toowoomba Highway. I have zero sympathy for running a red light though, orange means slow down and prepare to stop not speed up to get through before turning red.

Re: How many out of work?
Not a month yet so I can't vote. I guess that's good, right?

Obviously they allow x amount of distance for a car to stop travelling at the speed limit when the light changes to amber. |

They might too - real chance. When I was recruiting last year I was astonished to realise I barely read cvs only picking out highlights.

Re: How many out of work?
Functional resumes are good for hiding gaps. I should know :)
(I've been out of work about eight weeks but I'm not looking yet - not applying, at least.) |
Re: How many out of work?
OH recently lost her job (Admin) and it took just under 8 weeks to get a new one.
I lost me job (Phone Tech) on Monday, but start new one (Broadband Tech) tomorrow ... :) |
Re: How many out of work?
Debs hubby here:
I been out now for about eight weeks and it's pissing me right off, so bored. I keep going on the websites trolling all the vacant positions and i sit here wondering what i have to do to get a job now, i joined an agency got a job down by the airport - it was an ok job but the travel just pissed me off in the end. I left and i am beginning to wish i had stuck it out as the job was a doddle really:p You can tell it's getting tight now, as all the jobs i have looked at you are required to have folk ticket diggers ticket ticket for this ticket for that broom up your arse, computer perfect, oh and smile. All i want to do is work, not compete in the world all in one Olympics. |
Re: How many out of work?
Was made redundant the week before Xmas and it took till April to find something:eek:
Granted the floods didn't help but in all the years I've lived here I've never had such a tough time finding work:thumbdown: With no Centerlink payments it was pretty tough going:eek: |
Re: How many out of work?
Hubby was made redundant two days after we moved to our new house, that was 3 years ago with first lots GFC, it took him 8 weeks to get a job but the journey was between 4 to 5 hours a day, he did it for 3 months but couldn't cope with the journey anymore so started teaching privately he had big follower of students & they got very good OP & on his spare time he use to do deliveries then he put his CV for Australia wide, he got a job with a oil company & when he bad job he applied for other jobs & now he has a very good job at a very high level.
For some reason in Australia it's easier to find a job if you have a job. But I can't find a job since my move to Sydney, even thought I had a good job before my move from Qld it didnt make one onuse of different now I'm applying for everything now someone might feel sorry for me & offer me a job.;) |
