my consultant wants us to have are meds and police checks done before we get a yes from the TRA.is this a good idea to speed things up

Yes and no. When you get the visa, you must enter Australia before 12 months from the date of your meds or police checks, whichever is earlier. If you're still at TRA stage, I would say don't do your meds yet.

Once you have passed TRA and sent your main visa application, then it is safer to get them done.

Would definately wait as said before they only last for 12mths so now applications are going through quite quickly I would send them in just after your application when you have been given a case number.
We had ours done oct(Police checks) and dec(meds) but didnt get our visas till march - so now we have to be in by oct. This is all well and good if we can sell our house by then!!!!

Also, if you have a health undertaking you normally only get 6 months to validate from date of medical.
